Shocking Study Reveals Hidden Chemical Threat Tied to Deadly Disease New

Shocking Study Reveals Hidden Chemical Threat Tied to Deadly Disease

Exposure to pesticides may aggressively increase your risk of developing a deadly neurodegenerative disease. In the US, overall pesticide use has declined since the 1980s. But globally, pesticide use has never been higher.Growing populations require more crops and pesticides are cheaper to come by.Pesticides are a group of chemicals that protect crops from animal pests and weeds. ValentinValkov – stock.adobe.comWhile global pesticide use has risen steadily over the past three decades, so have cases of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS. About 35,000 people in the US have ALS.The fatal disease destroys motor neurons — the nerve cells that connect the brain and spinal cord to muscles. Over time, people with ALS lose control of muscles throughout the body, affecting speech, eating and breathing. As many as 80% of people with ALS survive less than five years after diagnosis. However, scientists still don’t know exactly what causes ALS, though they’ve been looking into pesticides as a possible risk factor since the 1980‘s. Now, a new study adds to the growing evidence that these chemicals may play a role.Researchers looked at data from ALS studies conducted around the world over the last 35 years. They found that occupational exposure to pesticides was associated with a 61% to 71% higher risk of developing ALS compared to people who weren’t exposed. They also found that the greater a person’s pesticide exposure, the higher their risk of developing ALS.The association was especially strong in men, who were twice as likely to develop ALS if they had been exposed to pesticides on the job.ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. herraez – stock.adobe.comWhat pesticides do to our nervous systemPesticides are a broad group of chemicals designed to control everything from weeds (herbicides) and insects (insecticides) to rodents (rodenticides) and fungi (fungicides).Glyphosate is the most commonly used pesticide in the country. comzeal – stock.adobe.comAnd while overall pesticide use is down in the US, herbicide use is rising. Herbicides were among the categories of pesticides most strongly associated with ALS in this new study.Glyphosate, the weed killer sold under the brand name Roundup, is the most widely used herbicide in the country.Research suggests glyphosate can disrupt communication between neurons and trigger inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, which can lead to neuron death and motor dysfunction Glyphosate — all hallmarks of ALS.Atrazine is the second most commonly used herbicide. It has also been linked to Parkinson’s Disease, another neurodegenerative disorder. These are just two of the dozens of chemicals used to control animal and plant pests and each affects the human body differently.Farmworkers are exposed abnormal amounts of toxic pesticides, which has numerous health consequences. APPesticides on the jobResearchers emphasized that the new study looked at people who were exposed to pesticides at work, where they may absorb high doses over short periods of time, primarily through their skin or by breathing in the chemicals.Farmworkers of all kinds — from harvesters and pesticide mixers to greenhouse employees and warehouse workers who pack and ship produce — are regularly exposed to pesticides. They can come into contact with pesticide residue on plants, contaminated water or airborne chemicals when pesticides drift during spraying. And ALS isn’t the only concern.Research has linked higher pesticide exposure to blood disorders, respiratory illnesses, endocrine dysfunction, nervous system damage, infertility and certain types of cancer.

Chilling Clown Sighting Turns Fatal: The Twisted Tale of a Teen's Dark Night New

Chilling Clown Sighting Turns Fatal: The Twisted Tale of a Teen's Dark Night

A suburban Illinois community was left in shock after a 15-year-old boy was arrested following a fatal stabbing shortly after being caught on camera prowling local homes dressed as a creepy killer clown. Tragically, an elderly local was killed, and the teenager was taken into custody by Illinois State Police following the attack in East St. Louis. On Monday evening, August 3, residents spotted a person roaming through the neighborhood in a clown costume . Eerie CCTV footage captured the masked teenager approaching a resident's front porch around 9:11PM, leaning toward the Ring doorbell camera before he left a chilling audio message, saying: “I've been looking for you.” The teen wore a creepy costume when he scared neighbours. Credit: Lora Palmer/Facebook The teen dressed as a clown had been roaming the neighborhood for hours According to resident Lee Palmer, who shared the footage, the masked person lingered on the property for several minutes before creeping around to the back of the house. He told a local news outlet : "I couldn't believe it. He was dressed in the clown outfit." He also added that the encounter was deeply alarming for his elderly mother who was home alone at the time. Other neighbors reported seeing the teenager going door to door throughout the area and terrifyingly glaring into windows while carrying a large knife. Less than an hour after the terrifying doorbell interaction, local police responded around 10:00PM to reports of a body lying in the road, just blocks away from where the clown was spotted. Credit: Jeremy Hogan/Getty An elderly man died from his injuries St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. later identified the victim as 78-year-old John Wesley Allen Sr., of St. Louis. Coroner reports confirmed that Allen died from multiple stab wounds sustained during the violent incident. Following an intensive investigation into the surrounding neighborhood and the surveillance video circulating on social media, Illinois State Police announced the arrest of the 15-year-old suspect on Tuesday. Investigators believe the teenager in custody is the same individual seen in the Ring footage wearing the clown outfit and carrying the weapon. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the minor due to his age. Cops have not disclosed a clear motive for the attack, what brought the teenager to the neighborhood, or whether he had any prior connection to the victim. The investigation remains active as state and local police work to determine the full circumstances behind the deadly incident. Featured image credit: Lora Palmer/Facebook

Bianca Censori's Daring Look in Ibiza Sparks Heated Debate New

Bianca Censori's Daring Look in Ibiza Sparks Heated Debate

A new, nude photo of Bianca Censori has been posted to Instagram by husband Kanye West yet again. The rapper has never been shy in showing off his wife's body, with Censori having previously gone viral for wearing a sheer nude dress for the Grammys in 2025. That's not all, as Censori is not a stranger to wearing revealing clothing , having worn nude underwear on a roller-skating trip and sporting a sheer top and barely-there shorts for a tanning session in the past. But the Australian architect has seemingly taken things to the next level when it comes to her wardrobe, a trend which has been consistent following her marriage to Kanye West, now known as Ye. The public has continued to raise questions about the couple's potentially coercive power dynamic as a result, with Ye even seen telling Censori to reveal her outfit to the public in the past. Bianca Censori was pictured in another nude dress on Ye's Instagram story. Credit: Instagram/@ye Bianca Censori's new nude outfit Ye, 49, showed the new dress off to his 20.1 million followers earlier this week, as the couple partied in Ibiza before Kanye's concert in Madrid. Censori, 31, left nothing to the imagination as she posed between two friends with a mischievous pout, and at first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking she was completely nude. She was wearing a barely-there, see-through bodysuit, completely exposing her breasts, with no underwear visible underneath the outfit either. But in the snap, she managed to cover her private area up with her leg, arching her back in the pose. That wasn't the only risqué outfit sported by the Aussie on the island, as she was also seen in a plunging, black thong leotard with a low neckline from Ye's fashion brand, Yeezy. She also wore fishnets and high heels, though she did also experience a nip slip while sporting the outfit, as one of her friends captioned it: "My breast friends." Many were left shocked by the look, as one fan wrote: "It is so low class and p**n level," as another said: "This is being in the nude!" A third claimed: "She's very pretty, with a lovely smile (when she smiles), and by all accounts actually quite intelligent… I mean, wtf is going on in her head to dress and do this." Bianca Censori is no stranger to bearing all with her outfits. Credit: Jon Kopaloff / Getty Images. Bianca Censori addresses claims she is controlled by Ye Censori spoke up about rumors over her relationship dynamic back in February, in a rare, exclusive interview with Vanity Fair . She spoke about her perceived "obsession" with nudity in the interview, speaking about claims that she was more or less controlled by her husband. In her three years of being in the public eye, she has been highly criticized for her fashion choices, but speaking about her controversial Grammys outfit, she said: "That, to me, is basically not nudity." Censori would also admit: "I had an obvious obsession with nudity," though she also claimed that she was done with baring all. She also rather obviously added that she "was naked everywhere." Stephen Colbert's Daughter Leaves '60 Minutes' Amid Growing CBS Turmoil New

Stephen Colbert's Daughter Leaves '60 Minutes' Amid Growing CBS Turmoil

Stephen Colbert’s daughter has resigned from “60 Minutes,” becoming the latest behind-the-scenes producer to leave the venerable newsmagazine as it grapples with a talent exodus, a reportedly unaired Jeffrey Epstein investigation and mounting scrutiny of its future ownership.Madeleine Carlisle, a well-regarded associate producer who joined “60 Minutes” after reporting stints at Time and The Atlantic, resigned from the broadcast in recent days, according to Status. The exit creates an awkward family bookend for CBS.Stephen Colbert’s daughter, Madeleine Carlisle, has resigned from “60 Minutes” amid a wave of behind-the-scenes departures at CBS News. Getty ImagesCarlisle left just months after the network pulled the plug on her father’s top-rated “Late Show,” ending Stephen Colbert’s 11-season run on May 21 after CBS called the cancellation a “purely financial decision.”CBS and Carlisle both declined to comment on her departure.Carlisle’s exit comes as multiple producers have left the program since the May defenestrations of veterans on the team, according to Status. The ouster of journos including correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega, along with executive producer Tanya Simon and executive editor Draggan Mihailovich, has since been come to be called “Black Thursday” by remaining staffers.Additional departures are potentially looming as “60 Minutes” prepares to return next month under the leadership of Bari Weiss and executive producer Nick Bilton, Status reported. The latest personnel shakeup coincides with fresh questions surrounding an Epstein investigation that never made it to air.Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) says he sat for an interview with Alfonsi in March as part of a planned segment examining the relationship between big banks and the late financier and sex offender.Stephen Colbert’s yearslong run as host of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” ended earlier this year. Scott Kowalchyk /CBSNeither Wyden’s interview nor the broader Epstein story was ultimately broadcast before the season concluded in May, the senator said.CBS confirmed to The Post that Alfonsi interviewed Wyden for a potential segment but said the full story did not come together for airing during the latest “60 Minutes” season. The network pushed back forcefully against any suggestion the reporting had been shelved for editorial or political reasons.“We are proud of our aggressive and extensive reporting on the Epstein scandal. That reporting continues. We air pieces when they are ready and suggesting that an interview is being ‘suppressed’ for any reason is categorically false,” a CBS News spokesperson said.Carlisle joined “60 Minutes” after reporting stints at TIME and The Atlantic, according to her professional profile.Alfonsi’s departure was part of a broader purge of marquee talent at “60 Minutes.”CBS declined to renew the veteran correspondent’s contract after she publicly accused management of political interference in delaying her report on Venezuelan migrants held in El Salvador’s CECOT prison, while fellow correspondent Vega was also let go and longtime executive producer Simon was replaced by outsider Bilton.Weeks later, CBS fired Scott Pelley after the 37-year network veteran confronted management over the overhaul, while Anderson Cooper separately ended his nearly two-decade run as a part-time correspondent in February, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss has faced scrutiny over the direction of “60 Minutes” as the program contends with staff turnover. Getty ImagesThe developments come as Paramount’s proposed merger with Warner Bros. Discovery continues to face an antitrust challenge from a coalition of state attorneys general, with CNN increasingly becoming the public focus of the political fight. On Tuesday, TKO Group executive chairman Ari Emanuel endorsed the idea of creating an editorial board to oversee CNN in an effort to ease concerns over future media ownership if the merger proceeds.Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Emanuel said the litigation challenging the deal is “a little bit about politics, about CNN,” and suggested “an editorial board” could be established over the news organization to make sure “everybody’s calm about news and possibly Larry Ellison controlling CNN and CBS.”“60 Minutes” executive producer Nick Bilton is preparing the newsmagazine for its fall return amid a series of staff departures. Getty ImagesEmanuel’s remarks came after Paramount chief executive David Ellison argued in a New York Times opinion essay that CNN has become the real flashpoint in the merger litigation and pledged the combined company would play news coverage “down the middle.”Emanuel echoed Ellison’s public defense of the transaction while proposing an outside editorial structure intended to blunt concerns about the Ellison family’s influence over major news organizations.Whether the proposal gains traction remains unclear.A federal judge is expected to decide whether the states’ challenge proceeds to trial later this year or slips into 2027.

Bernie Sanders' $2,400 Social Security Boost: What's the Catch? New

Bernie Sanders' $2,400 Social Security Boost: What's the Catch?

Millions of Social Security recipients could see their annual benefits increase by $2,400 under a proposal championed by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, urged the party to back the expansion of the retirement program rather than benefit cuts as Congress debates the program's long-term financial future. “If Congress does not act within the next six years, Social Security benefits will be cut by 22 percent. We have an obligation to the American people to ensure that never happens,” Sanders wrote in a "Dear Colleague" letter sent to Democratic lawmakers this week. “Just as importantly, we have a responsibility to tell the American people exactly where we stand. Americans deserve to know not only how we will extend Social Security's solvency, but how we will address the retirement crisis facing millions of seniors today.”Sanders said that based on a 2023 analysis by the Social Security Administration's chief actuary, lawmakers could extend the program's solvency for 75 years while simultaneously increasing benefits by $2,400 a month.“At a time when the wealthiest people in America are becoming much wealthier, asking them to pay the same percentage of their income into Social Security as teachers, nurses, firefighters, and construction workers is not a radical idea,” Sanders said. “It is common sense. It is what the American people want.”...Why It MattersThe future of program funding is in question after the Social Security Administration (SSA) reported that the trust fund is projected to be unable to pay full scheduled benefits beginning in 2032. Without congressional action, the program would be able to pay only about 78 percent of promised benefits, resulting in an automatic 22 percent cut for more than 70 million Americans who rely on the program. Many retirees already struggle financially despite Social Security's annual cost-of-living benefit increases. According to Sanders, more than 20 percent of seniors are trying to survive on less than $15,000 a year, while nearly half are living on less than $30,000. What to KnowCurrently, workers and employers each pay a 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax, but only on earnings up to a certain limit. In 2026, that cap is $184,500, meaning income above that threshold is not subject to Social Security payroll taxes. Sanders said the structure disproportionately benefits the nation's highest earners. “What does that mean? It means that Elon Musk—the wealthiest man in the world, worth an estimated $690 billion—pays the same amount into Social Security as someone earning $184,500 a year,” Sanders said. “It means that someone making $184,500 pays 6.2 percent of every dollar they earn into Social Security. But someone making ten times that amount—$1.845 million—pays just 0.6 percent of their income into the system. That is grossly unfair. That has got to change.”Under Sanders’ plan, Social Security payroll taxes would be applied to all income above $250,000, including investment income such as capital gains and dividends. Sanders said this would not increase taxes for the bottom 91 percent of Americans, who earn less than $250,000 annually. “Bernie Sanders is adamantly opposed to the privatization of Social Security, so he is wanting to remove the Social Security cap on dividends and income above $250,000 while also making that income subject to payroll taxes,” Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek. “Any tax increase would be unpopular, yet it is feasible.”If Sanders’ proposed change went into effect, he said it could extend Social Security's solvency for 75 years while increasing benefits by approximately $2,400 per year. Additionally, millions of seniors could be lifted out of poverty.Who Would Be AffectedSanders’ proposal would have implications for current retirees and future beneficiaries. More than 70 million Americans currently receive Social Security benefits. The majority of recipients could benefit from Sanders’ proposed increase in monthly payments, while high-income individuals with annual earnings exceeding $250,000 would face higher Social Security taxes under the plan. However, not everything would exactly be fixed, Thompson cautioned.“The real concern is that even if you raise the cap, it doesn’t solve the Social Security funding issue entirely,” Thompson said. “It will have to be a multifaceted approach while the cap is just a singular component towards an overall solution. It is definitely a move in the right direction. However, far more is needed.”Political HurdlesDespite the financial benefit to a large number of Americans, Sanders’ proposal faces an uncertain path in Congress. He and other progressives have repeatedly advocated for expanding Social Security benefits, but Republicans have generally opposed increasing payroll taxes on high-income earners. Similar legislation introduced by Sanders has failed to advance, and the current Congress remains divided on how to address the program's financial challenges. “The proposal would be financially feasible only if Congress is willing to approve the accompanying tax increases on higher earners, and it's unlikely to find much agreement on revising tax policy at this point to solve the coming funding problems,” Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek. What Happens NextSanders is encouraging Democratic lawmakers to publicly support expanding Social Security and eliminating the earnings cap for high-income Americans. However, any changes to benefits or taxes would ultimately require congressional approval and the president's signature before taking effect. “If the proposals are dead, then we need alternatives,” Drew Powers, the founder of Illinois-based Powers Financial Group, told Newsweek. “Social Security is too important to our seniors to let the problems sit and fester.”Contact Newsweek editors on this story: Jason Lemon and Dave Siminoff.

Ohio Mother of 16 Faces Shocking Trial Twist

The mother of 16 “almost feral” children who were kept in a feces-covered, sickening Ohio house of horrors has requested a mental health evaluation to determine whether she’s fit to stand trial.Elizabeth Siders, 33, may be “suffering from mental health issues and that competency may be an issue and a clear impediment to the defendant’s ability to assist in her own defense,” her lawyer, Thomas Stolly, wrote in a new motion, according to FOX8. Elizabeth Siders, 33, is facing 16 counts of child abuse charges after as many children were removed from a house of horrors in Vinton County, Ohio. Southeastern Ohio Regional JailStolly also claimed in the motion that Siders’ mental state “would also have affected her ability to understand the wrongfulness of her conduct at the time of the alleged offenses.”If the motion is approved, Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail — where Siders is being held — will have 30 days to get a psychiatrist to perform an evaluation. Siders, her husband Gary Siders Jr., 37, and her mother-in-law Christina Siders, 67, and father-in-law Gary Siders, 73, were arrested in June after authorities targeted their home in Vinton County, Ohio, and found the children who “looked like almost feral animals,” according to police. The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, were found living in squalor inside a cramped 12-by-12 room in a scene Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described as “pure evil.”Authorities allegedly found children, ages 1 to 18, living in squalor and isolation inside a cramped 12-by-12 room at the home on June 30, 2026. Secret FBI Investigation: Was Trump Really a Russian Agent? New

Secret FBI Investigation: Was Trump Really a Russian Agent?

WASHINGTON — The FBI opened an investigation into whether President Trump was “wittingly or unwittingly” acting as a Russian agent when he fired then-Director James Comey in 2017, according to bombshell documents released by the White House Wednesday. The probe, called Oxferd Comma, grew out of Crossfire Hurricane, the bureau’s probe into whether Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with the Kremlin to get the 45th president elected. The Trump White House initially cited Comey’s handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a personal email server as the reason for his dismissal — but it was later revealed the president fired Comey because he wouldn’t publicly state that Trump was not a target of Crossfire Hurricane. Former FBI Director James Comey testifies in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in Washington, DC. (Jack Gruber) USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectThe May 16, 2017, memo opening Oxferd Comma was approved by then-FBI General Counsel James A. Baker and Bill Priestap, assistant director of the bureau’s counterintelligence division. The probe was meant to “determine if President Trump is or was directed by, controlled by, and/or coordinated activities with, the Russian Federation in a manner constituting a threat to the national security of the United States and/or a violation of federal criminal statutes,” the memo said.“In addition, this investigation will also seek to determine whether President Trump and others yet to be named obstructed and/or conspiracy to obstruct any associated FBI investigation.”Trump was not under personal investigation for collusion with Russia during the 2016 campaign, but his firing of Comey raised questions about possible obstruction of justice, which triggered an investigation headed by then-special counsel Robert Mueller, a former FBI director.Oxferd Comma was closed on April 9, 2019, with no charges against Trump. He accused the FBI of targeting him and has often refered to Comey as a “dirty cop.”

Why Everyone's Talking About 'Symbiosexual' Attraction New

Why Everyone's Talking About 'Symbiosexual' Attraction

Now more than ever, more people are coming out as 'symbiosexual' - and we're not surprised. Sexuality is a complex aspect of human identity, influenced by a wide range of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors. It is not simply about sexual orientation or behavior but encompasses desires, attractions, emotional connections, and personal experiences that can change over time. People’s understanding of their own sexuality can be fluid and influenced by their environment, upbringing, societal norms, and individual life experiences. Sexuality is a complex aspect of human identity. Credit: Igor Ustynskyy / Getty Cultural expectations, religious beliefs, and social pressures can further complicate one’s expression of sexuality, often leading to inner conflicts or confusion. Cue symbiosexualism. Love triangles have been a staple part of narratives throughout storytelling history, but scientists now believe that this has influenced an entirely new sexuality. A new study by researchers at Seattle University has identified that 'symbiosexual' people are attracted to the energy between established couples rather than between themselves and one other person, bringing a whole new meaning to the more, the merrier. Symbiosexualism is a newly researched sexuality type. Credit: Maskot/Getty This type of sexuality is described as "attraction to the energy, multidimensionality, and power shared between people in relationships," as per a definition provided by the Archives of Sexual Behavior when discussing a previous 2023 study titled 'The Pleasure Study.' The study, which surveyed 373 participants about aspects of their sexual and gender identity, also found that a large portion of participants in the study actually felt romantic and sexual attraction to the “synergy” of a third person being thrown into the mix. And in a world filled with open relationships and sexual freedom, we're not surprised. Credit: Visoot Uthairam/Getty Speaking of the outcome, Dr. Sally Johnston, an adjunct professor of anthropology and sociology who conducted the study, said: "We need to rethink the nature of human attraction and desire as only one-to-one experiences." Further research into the topic found that there was a "lack of recognition and validation for this attraction," even within the polyamorous community and this often led to the mistreatment of the third person within the relationship. The findings of the studies mentioned above allegedly "push the boundaries of the concepts of desire and sexual orientation in sexuality studies and challenge the ongoing invisibility and invalidation of and stigma and discrimination against such attractions," according to Dr. Johnson. In an interview with the PsyPost, the researcher revealed that she was first interested in delving more into the unique sexuality after "[hearing] people talk openly about experiencing attraction to established couples." "I wanted to learn more about this understudied attraction," she added. Credit: Klaus Vedfelt/Getty After conducting the study, participants were interviewed to get a better understanding of why this sexuality was the best to describe what they were attracted to. One participant, referred to as 'Hayden', said that she was attracted to couples because of "their cohesiveness." "You feed off their energy, their attraction to each other… there’s an interplay between the couple," she added. Another participant, called 'Sage', also added: "I also just want to be smack in the middle of that relationship. I would also like to be included in this relationship... I really think my ideal dynamic might be myself and a couple." While there is not much research out there about this particular desire currently, we're sure there will be much more over the next decade as sexuality continues to broaden. Indiana Horror: What Drove This Man to Attack a Newborn?

An Indiana nutjob viciously bit a newborn’s face to stop it from crying — and later allegedly told cops the infant looked like a “busted up egg” when he was done with it.Authorities say Kaden Manuel Lewis Shurm, 18, began by “nibbling” on the 9-day-old baby’s cheek before repeatedly biting in a “chomping down” motion, according to FOX59.Shrum, who tips the scales at a whopping 250 pounds, was arrested and charged with felony battery with injury to a person under 14.  Kaden Manuek Lewis Shrum allegedly bit an infant and claimed the baby looked like an egg. Monroe County Sheriff's Office Shrum’s wanted poster in connection with his bond violation for previous acts. Monroe County Sheriff's OfficeA pediatrician first alerted child protective services to the infant’s injuries on July 14, prompting a probe by the Bloomington Police Department, according to court documents obtained by The Post. The brazen biter reportedly confessed that he bit the child to silence it at around 4 a.m. — initially “nibbling” before escalating until the newborn’s face resembled a “busted up egg.”Shrum was arrested at the hospital; the baby’s current condition remains unknown. It was not immediately clear if Shrum and the child had any relation. The lunatic also faces felony charges in separate cases for battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, as well as a misdemeanor battery charge.Shrum briefly posted a $5,500 bond on the child abuse charge on July 21 before being re-arrested on a bond revocation warrant for the prior cases.

Jetstar's Bold Move: Why Passengers Will Pay for Overhead Locker Use New

Jetstar's Bold Move: Why Passengers Will Pay for Overhead Locker Use

For passengers on the budget Australian airline Jetstar, the days of cramming your bag into an overhead locker already full of your seatmates’ full-sized suitcases are coming to an end, but there’s a catch. The carrier will charge passengers for stowing carry-on bags in the overhead compartments, beginning in February 2027.The move came after passengers and airline staff named “having bags weighed at the gate and struggling to find room in overhead lockers as the more stressful parts of the airport experience,” the carrier said in a statement on Wednesday.Australian budget airline Jetstar will soon charge passengers to use overhead compartments for carry-on bags. Space_Cat – stock.adobe.comIt makes Jetstar the latest low-cost carrier to introduce a payment system for carry-on bags, with budget airlines in the United States and Europe commonly charging passengers to use the compartments.Passengers could stow a purse, laptop bag or small backpack that fitted within specified measurements under the seat in front of them for no charge, Jetstar said. The cost of using the overhead compartments in the cabin would start from 25 Australian dollars ($18) one way, with the price depending on the route.Bags stowed in the lockers can weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and will no longer be weighed by airline staff as passengers line up to board, Jetstar said. The existing weight limit of 7 kilograms (15 pounds) will be scrapped for the small item placed under travelers’ seats.Starting February 2027, the airline will charge from $18 one way for overhead storage. Jo Panuwat D – stock.adobe.comLike many carriers worldwide, Australian and New Zealand airlines have already introduced charges for checked luggage, seat selection, and some dining and in-flight entertainment options. An industry analyst said, however, that Jetstar was the first to charge for use of the overhead lockers.“It will ruffle feathers because Australian travelers have got such high expectations,” said Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com. “For such a long time they lived in a bubble of full-service options only.”Jetstar said the change would reduce frustrations at boarding gates. But passengers can still stow a small bag under their seat for free. ISVO – stock.adobe.com“By giving customers an underseat bag with the option to add Priority Carry-on, we can make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time,” Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said in a statement. She added that the move would ensure customers only paid for what they needed. Petersen, however, said Jetstar’s base fares remained higher than those of low-budget carriers in Europe that had brought in similar policies.“Jetstar’s starting price is generally well above what Ryanair or Wizz Air can offer, largely because Australia lacks that level of competition and because wages, taxes and operating costs sit much higher here,” she said.
