Hailey Bieber's Secret to a Sculpted Body: What's the Hype About BFR Bands?

Hailey Bieber's Secret to a Sculpted Body: What's the Hype About BFR Bands?

Just months after declaring pilates was “over,” Hailey Bieber is showing off the next fitness craze powering her peach. And experts say it can trick your muscles into working harder for a “crazy pump.” “I love Pilates, I really do,” she said in an April interview with TIME. “But I think it’s become a little bit of a fad, and it’s really hard to find really good teachers that care about form.”Hailey Bieber sported BFR bands and a weighted vest during a recent workout. Instagram/@haileybieberLess than two months later, Bieber posted a photo wearing a weighted vest, a popular exercise accessory that has exploded across social media, even as experts remain divided over its benefits. But she was also sporting a less familiar piece of workout equipment that fitness professionals are far more enthusiastic about: Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training bands. Paul Comsulea, a personal trainer at Equinox in Southport, Connecticut, told the Post that BFR bands help isolate the glute muscles from the hamstrings, forcing the glutes to do more of the work. By partially restricting blood flow into the muscle, the bands create metabolic stress — the burning sensation Comsulea and lifters describe as a “crazy pump.” That stress produces a chemical-rich environment that stimulates muscle growth, allowing users to achieve similar training benefits while lifting significantly lighter weights. “The restricted blood flow tricks your muscles into working way harder than they normally would at that load,” explained Comsulea. Because the glutes are working harder, lifters can often achieve gains comparable to those from lifting weights that are roughly 20% to 30% heavier. Comsulea noted that the bands work best when paired with glute isolation exercises, such as kickbacks, bridges and banded movements, rather than heavy compound lifts like hip thrusts or deep squats.Hailey Bieber has embraced strength training as part of her fitness routine. Instagram/@haileybieberBack that thing up — with researchThe Rhode founder certainly seems to be on the right track.A 2020 study published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy compared eight weeks of BFR training with traditional high-load resistance training and a control group, examining muscular performance, pain and vascular function.Researchers found that BFR training produced muscular performance improvements — including strength and endurance — and vascular benefits similar to supervised heavy resistance training, despite using much lower exercise intensity. The findings suggest BFR can be an effective alternative for people who cannot or should not lift heavy weights.Still, experts warn that anyone hoping the bands are a shortcut to a perkier backside should temper their expectations. BFR bands are not a get-out-of-leg-day-free cardWhile they can enhance glute activation, the muscles are ultimately built most effectively through compound movements like squats, Romanian deadlifts and lunges, which simultaneously strengthen the quads, hamstrings and glutes.Skipping those foundational exercises means missing out on some of the most effective glute-building movements.Hailey, for her part, gets her routine from celebrity trainer Kirsty Godso.According to Women’s Health, Godso’s go-to combo starts with 12 banded glute medius hip thrust on each leg, is followed by 12 dual elevated hip thrust with a heavy dumbbell, and finishes with 12 single-leg dual elevated hip thrusts on each side.Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) bands are designed to increase muscle activation while using lighter weights. SKfoto – stock.adobe.comThere’s another downside to relying too heavily on glute isolation: Strong glutes paired with weak hamstrings is a recipe for multiple muscle imbalances that affect pelvic alignment, often leading to lower back tightness or pain over time. For that reason, Comsulea says BFR bands are best viewed as a supplement to a well-rounded strength program, not a replacement for one.“I will never recommend them to somebody who just started working out,” he said. “It’s more for advanced training.” Hear that? Mrs. Bieber’s bum is advanced.Comsulea recently incorporated the bands into a program for a client he has trained for three years. Her current goal is building her glutes to achieve a lifted “bump” effect. The benefits, however, extend beyond aesthetic goals.Comsulea said BFR bands can also be valuable tools for people recovering from knee or hip surgery who aren’t yet cleared for heavy squats or hip thrusts. By pairing the bands with bodyweight exercises like glute bridges, patients can continue stimulating muscle growth while placing far less stress on healing joints.Older adults may benefit, tooStrong glutes play a major role in balance, stability and mobility as people age. BFR training allows older clients to challenge those muscles without relying on heavy loads that can place excessive stress on tendons and joints. That said, Comsulea emphasized that proper placement, pressure and timing are critical. Worn incorrectly, the bands can reduce effecetiveness and increase the risk of injury. He recommends learning the technique from a qualified trainer or physical therapist before attempting BFR training alone.Consulting a doctor is also essential. BFR training is generally not recommended for people with a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clotting conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, active limb infections or whose who are pregnancy.

Daylight Saving Time Faces a Major Turning Point – What Happens Next?

Daylight Saving Time Faces a Major Turning Point – What Happens Next?

A bipartisan push to make Daylight Saving Time permanent is heading for a chamber-wide vote after clearing a key House hurdle. The House Rules Committee on Monday teed up a floor vote on the Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to enact Daylight Saving Time year-round — with an option to opt out. The committee approved the rule in a 6-4 vote. The measure has the support of many coastal lawmakers and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly urged Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and end the twice-a-year ritual of changing clocks — a practice currently observed by every state except Hawaii and most of Arizona.Proponents argue that resetting clocks has negative health impacts, while permanent Daylight Saving Time would boost outdoor recreation, tourism and economic activity, among other benefits. Most Americans already set their clocks forward one hour each spring to preserve more evening daylight before “falling back” one hour in November.“Americans are overwhelmingly supportive of this policy and want to end the practice of ‘springing forward’ and ‘falling back.’ Locking the clock all year long would have positive impacts on sleep schedules, energy conservation, motor vehicle safety, and our economy,” Chairman Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., said in an opening statement Monday.A bipartisan push to make Daylight Saving Time permanent is heading for a chamber-wide vote after clearing a key House hurdle. AP“In practice, this change would mean more time for people to exercise outside, visit family, attend concerts and sporting events, attract customers to their retail businesses, and more.”“Floridians and Americans across the country are tired of the biannual time change, and the evidence is clear that permanent daylight saving time can improve public health, reduce traffic accidents, lower crime and encourage more outdoor activity,” Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., who authored the measure, previously said in a May news release. “Ending the clock change is a commonsense reform that will improve everyday life for millions of Americans,” he added. The legislation’s momentum comes after the House Energy and Commerce Committee overwhelmingly passed the measure 48-1 in May.President Trump, with Utah Governor Spencer J. Cox, takes questions from the media after signing an executive order related to Utah protected lands, in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC, on July 13, 2026. REUTERS“It’s time that people can stop worrying about the ‘Clock,’ not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice-yearly production,” Trump wrote following the Sunshine Protection Act’s advancement out of committee. “It will also be a very nice WIN for the Republican Party. Take it! We are going with the far more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which gives you a longer, brighter Day — And who can be against that — This is an easy one!”Roughly 20 states have already passed legislation that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent if Congress were to authorize the practice. Alabama, South Carolina, Oregon, Maine and Florida are among those places. But opponents, including several medical organizations, argue that permanent standard time — which provides more sunlight in the morning — would be the healthier option because it would more closely align with the body’s natural circadian rhythms.Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., proposed amending the bill with language from her co-sponsored Sunshine for Our Kids Act, which would make standard time permanent nationwide. The amendment was quickly rejected. The measure has the support of many coastal lawmakers and President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly urged Congress to make Daylight Saving Time permanent and end the twice-a-year ritual of changing clocks. AP Photo/Julia Demaree NikhinsonScanlon argued that permanent daylight saving time would pose significant health and safety risks by leaving more Americans — particularly children — in darkness during morning hours. She also pointed to the nation’s brief experiment with year-round daylight saving time in 1974, which Congress abandoned after widespread public backlash.Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., was also the lone lawmaker to oppose the legislation during the Energy and Commerce Committee markup in May, citing concerns that year-round daylight saving time could negatively affect children’s health and sleep schedules. Some conservative lawmakers have also argued that GOP leadership should be focused on what they describe as more pressing legislative issues, including legislation codifying Trump’s border security executive orders and the stalled SAVE America Act.“Republicans are majoring in the minors — fiddling with the clocks while the country burns,” Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, wrote Monday. The House has already passed versions of the SAVE America Act multiple times, but the measure has struggled to overcome the Senate’s legislative filibuster. The Senate unanimously passed a version of the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, but it died in the House amid opposition, including from lawmakers who voiced concerns about darker morning hours in parts of the country during the winter.

Last Meal Mistake Leads to Agonizing End for Death Row Inmate

Last Meal Mistake Leads to Agonizing End for Death Row Inmate

A death row inmate had an "excruciating" execution after making a mistake with his last meal, according to an autopsy report. Wesley Ira Purkey was 68 years old when he died by lethal injection after he was placed on death row in 2004 for kidnapping, raping, and then murdering 16-year-old schoolgirl Jennifer Long in 1998. The teenage student was last seen at East High School in Kansas City, Missouri on January 22, and the alarm was raised after she failed to attend lessons. Wesley Ira Purkey. Credit: Kansas Department of Corrections Purkey reportedly lured the girl into his pick-up truck outside a grocery store. He then drove her to his home before raping and fatally stabbing her. Her body was dismembered with a chainsaw and partially burned in a fireplace before her captor buried her remains in a septic pond in Clearwater, Kansas. Jennifer's remains have never been found, per the Death Penalty Information Center. Purkey then beat 80-year-old polio sufferer Mary Bales to death with a claw hammer. He had been to Mary's home to fix a kitchen tap when he carried out the murder. He was arrested after neighbors saw him attempting to burn Mary's body. He was formerly sentenced to death on January 23, 2004. When his time on death row came to an end, Purkey - who was said to be suffering from dementia - had reportedly requested pecan pie as his last meal, asking to save it for later. Though, he mistakingly did not realize that there would not be a "later" for him. Wesley Ira Purkey reportedly lured the girl into his pick-up truck outside a grocery store. He then drove her to his home before raping and fatally stabbing her. Credit: Paul Harris / Getty However, this would quickly become the least of his concerns. After he was executed by lethal injection, Purkey's autopsy revealed that he suffered "severe bilateral acute pulmonary oedema" and "frothy pulmonary oedema in trachea and main stem bronchi". This essentially meant that fluid quickly entered his lungs and trachea, causing "a near-drowning" sensation which a medical expert described as "among the most excruciating feelings known to man". Dr Gail Van Norman, a Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, said the filling of Purkey's lungs could only have happened while he was still alive. "It is a virtual medical certainty, that most, if not all, prisoners will experience excruciating suffering, including sensations of drowning and suffocation from [the lethal injection drug] pentobarbital." Purkey's final words before he was executed at an Indiana prison reportedly were: "I deeply regret the pain and suffering I caused to Jennifer's family. I am deeply sorry. I deeply regret the pain I caused to my daughter, who I love so very much. This sanitized murder really does not serve no purpose whatsoever." The New York Times reported that Jennifer's father and stepmother told reporters that Purkey's execution was long overdue. "He needed to take his last breath, he took my daughter's last breath," William Long, Jennifer's father, said. Featured image credit: Paul Harris / Getty

What Happens to Sperm When It's Not Released?

What Happens to Sperm When It's Not Released?

A graphic simulation has revealed what actually happens to sperm inside a man’s body if it’s not ejaculated . Men start producing sperm shortly after they reach double figures in age and continue doing so for the rest of their lives. In fact, millions of sperm cells are produced in the testicles every day. According to Clear Blue , this all starts inside the testicles within a network of tiny tubes called the seminiferous tubules, which house germ cells. Under the influence of hormones such as testosterone, these germ cells transform into sperm. As they grow, the cells divide and slowly take on the “tadpole” shape that most people associate with sperm. The full journey from germ cell to fully mature sperm cell capable of fertilising an egg takes around 2.5 months. While that may sound like a long process, the male body is constantly producing sperm, meaning a healthy male will not run out, even if he ejaculates several times a day. A simulation shows what happens to the sperm in a man's body if it's not ejaculated within a certain amount of time. Credit: SCIEPRO/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY / Getty What If Sperm Isn't Ejaculated? A simulation on the YouTube account Dr. Smurf claims to show how the body handles the situation. The epididymis, the tube connected to the testicles, has a lining that breaks down old sperm cells. The protein and nutrients from dead sperm are reabsorbed and repurposed to create other cells in the body, including new sperm cells. In other words, the body runs a recycling system: Old sperm is broken down, its structural components, including enzymes, zinc, and fructose, are reclaimed, and the materials are reused. Depending on where it is, sperm can stay alive for differing amounts of time. If it isn’t reabsorbed into the body, it can be released via a nocturnal emission, commonly known as a wet dream, according to Medical News Today . Credit: Dr.Smurf/YouTube How Long Does Sperm Live? Sperm lifespan depends entirely on conditions, as outside the male body, they can die within minutes, as they need moisture and warmth to survive. However, inside a woman’s body, sperm can survive for up to five days in sperm-friendly cervical mucus. Around ovulation, cervical mucus helps protect sperm and makes it easier for them to reach an egg. Because sperm can live for up to five days, the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation are known as the fertile window. Is There A Health Risk? Heathline notes that there do not appear to be any risks associated with not releasing sperm via ejaculation. However, research has explored a potential link between ejaculation frequency and prostate cancer . Many factors can contribute to cancer risk, but a Harvard study discovered that among men who ejaculated most each month, their risk of prostate cancer was 31 percent lower. Sperm lives inside the male body about two and a half months. Credit: SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY / Getty How To Improve Sperm Health As men get older, sperm count and quality naturally tend to decline, and the likelihood of mutations may increase. While aging can’t be stopped, certain lifestyle changes may help support healthier sperm production and overall fertility. Keep sperm temperature cool, as testicles function best slightly below body temperature. Stop smoking as it can reduce fertility. Reduce alcohol consumption, since excessive drinking affects sperm quality. Avoid recreational drugs such as cannabis, anabolic steroids, and cocaine, which can damage sperm quality. Talk to your doctor about medications, as some prescription and over-the-counter drugs may affect fertility. Maintain a balanced diet, healthy weight, and manage stress, since severe stress can limit sperm production. Featured image credit: SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY / Getty

Sen. Lindsey Graham's Last Call: The Chilling Details Revealed

Sen. Lindsey Graham told one of of his staffers that he was experiencing chest pains and to call 911 shortly before his sudden death Saturday night, one of Graham’s Republican colleagues told reporters Monday. The comments by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) shed new light on Graham’s final hours after he returned from a trip to Ukraine and prepared to get back to work following Congress’ post-4th of July recess, despite feeling under the weather.“My former scheduler was Lindsey’s scheduler, and one of my staff members was with that scheduler the night Lindsey called,” said Tuberville, adding that the two aides were watching a World Cup soccer match at a Washington, DC-area restaurant.Sen. Iran's Foreign Minister Challenges Trump: The Hormuz Strait Will Always Be Under Our Watch

Dangerous Toy Trend Leaves Children Hospitalized: What Parents Must Know

Dangerous Toy Trend Leaves Children Hospitalized: What Parents Must Know

Doctors and fire officials are warning parents about a dangerous social media trend involving NeeDoh Cubes after several children suffered serious burn injuries that required hospital treatment. NeeDoh Cubes, made by toy company Schylling, are sensory toys marketed as being "designed to be as satisfying as they are fun." The range includes dozens of products such as the Cool Cats NeeDoh, NeeDoh Gummy Bear, and the NeeDoh Nice Cube. While the company has not disclosed exact sales numbers, it told ABC News the toys have achieved "double-digit growth year over year." The warning comes after reports that children have been placing the toys in microwaves to make them softer, despite packaging that specifically warns users not to heat, freeze, or microwave the products. Authorities say the trend has resulted in severe burns after the toys burst open while hot. Children suffer severe burn injuries The Nassau County Fire Commission and Fire Marshal's Office in New York described the social media challenge as "extremely dangerous" and warned it could "lead to severe injury or death." According to reports, children have suffered second- and third-degree burns after overheated NeeDoh Cubes exploded. ABC 7 reported that nine-year-old Caleb Chabolla from Chicago was left with second-degree burns when a NeeDoh Nice Cube burst across his face. His mother, Whitney Grub, said: "The right side of his face was kind of melting off, basically." Credit: Schylling In a Facebook post, the Nassau County Fire Commission and Fire Marshal's Office said that "several children around the world have suffered third-degree burns to the face," including a child in Nassau County who suffered "second-and-third-degree burns." "Toys are intended to be played with, as described on the label. Misusing a product by heating in a microwave, oven, or stovetop is dangerous," the post said. "Parents, guardians, and other caretakers are urged to monitor any activities of children when they are in the kitchen. Accidents can happen to an adult in the kitchen, even if they take precautions, so for a child who doesn't know any better, the risk is even greater." Doctors urge parents to stay alert Dr. Alicia Webb, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Children's of Alabama, also warned parents about the dangers of viral online challenges involving household products. "Parents need to be aware of this trend and all dangerous social media challenges because they can pose a serious risk to children, and the children participating are not yet mature enough to recognize the danger for themselves," she told The New York Post. She added that overheated toys can "easily explode, causing burns to the face, eyes, mouth, body, and can even cause internal damage if the hot substance is swallowed". Dr. Michael Cooper, director of service for the burn unit at Northwell's Staten Island University Hospital, said children's skin is particularly vulnerable and that "even a brief contact with a hot substance can cause significant tissue damage." Webb also warned that severe burns can leave children with lasting complications, including scarring and, in some cases, permanent disfigurement that may require skin grafts and specialized burn care. Cooper added that burn injuries may also result in "long-term psychological and cosmetic effects that may last well beyond the initial recovery period." Schylling responds to the incidents In a statement, Schylling said consumer safety remains its top priority and stressed that the products should never be heated or frozen. "Ensuring the safety of our consumers is fundamental for Schylling," a company representative said . "We are disappointed to see there has been a trend on social media demonstrating misuse of our NeeDoh products. Misusing a NeeDoh product by microwaving, heating, or freezing is dangerous and could cause injury to the consumer." The company added that it has worked with social media platforms to "remove influential content containing NeeDoh product misuse" and has included "a safety warning on NeeDoh packaging and our all e-commerce listings to help combat product misuse." Secret Ingredients in This Diet Could Transform Your Health

Secret Ingredients in This Diet Could Transform Your Health

The “fauxzempic” era is well underway. Many brands are marketing alternatives to GLP-1 weight loss drugs, but certain foods may also boost the effects of the naturally occurring hormone responsible for reducing hunger and stabilizing blood sugar.A recent study found one diet that not only boosted GLP-1 but also increased longevity and reduced body fat. One diet may not only increase longevity while reducing body fat, but also boost the GLP-1 hormone to reduce appetite. Chanelle Malambo/peopleimages.com – stock.adobe.comWhile weight loss medications continue to rise in popularity, they also can cause gastrointestinal side effects and loss of lean muscle mass, increasing the risk of falls and fractures. To promote a longer lifespan while minimizing frailty, researchers created a meal plan composed of low-amino-acid, high-carbohydrate and relatively high-fat foods.Nicknamed the “longevity diet,” the plan was based on the traditional Mediterranean diet, known for its increase in lifespan, but supplemented with a key nutrient — methionine, an essential amino acid.Researchers compared the “longevity diet” in mice with a typical Western diet high in processed sugars and fats, and a keto diet high in unsaturated fats, low in protein and very low in carbohydrates. The methionine-supplemented diet was the most effective at reducing fat mass and frailty while improving cardiometabolic markers and increasing GLP-1 levels.Meanwhile, the keto and Western diets increased fat mass and frailty, as well as either cholesterol levels or insulin resistance. The “longevity diet” consists of low protein, high carbohydrates, high fats and methionine, an essential amino acid.
