Tragic Family Story: What Led to the Heartbreaking Loss in Michigan?

Heartbreaking obituaries of the six kids who were shot dead by their father, who also killed their mother and then himself, reveal the young kids’ personalities and interests before their lives were violently cut short.

Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, was found dead along with her six kids – aged 5 to 15 – at their home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, last month after her husband, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot them dead before setting the house ablaze and turning the gun on himself, according to police.

Amanda “likely died earlier” than the children, Ottawa Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks told News 8 last week, although investigators are still working to establish a timeline of the killings. The couple’s dogs and a cat also died in the subsequent fire.

The touching tributes to Amanda and her children, published in the local newspaper this week, show a close-knit, loving family full of impassioned children with promising futures. 

Keegan Karolkiewicz, the eldest sibling at 15, was a competitive cross-country runner who recently passed his driver’s education and was looking forward to getting his license next year. The once wannabe chef would have been a freshman in high school this fall.

He was described as “outgoing, friendly, funny, and gentle” who always made sure everyone was included. He was a proud older brother who loved showing his siblings “the ways of TikTok,” the obituary states.

Bennet, 12, was an avid fisherman who had just gotten his hunting license and recently bagged his first deer with his grandpa. He also had an admiration for history and trivia after recently learning all about WWII.

Smith, 11, was a devout vegetarian who “had reservations about the family’s fishing pastime” but always participated. He took great care to watch over his younger brother, Teddy, and just learned to waterski and play golf with his grandfather, according to the obituary.

Ella and Caroline, 11, were both adopted from China — where they had recently returned from a trip with their mother.

Ella was described as “her mother’s shadow” and was a “fashionista with an artistic eye” who spent time doing crafts with her grandparents. 

Caroline was born with limited use of the right side of her body, which never stopped her from playing basketball, swimming and fishing. She was also a book lover, reading 100 books last summer.

Little Teddy, 5, was a “celebrity” among his siblings’ friends and a “scrappy little guy” who enjoyed playing with his toy cars, but was anxious about starting kindergarten in the fall at the school where his mother was a substitute teacher.

“He threw himself recklessly into everything – always running, always falling down, always getting up,” the boy’s obituary says.

The children’s mother Amanda “loved her family, and especially her six children … to whom she dedicated her children’s book, “The Magical Mantra” (2023) and for whom she modeled a life of curiosity, courage, and self-sacrifice,” her obituary states.

“Her family agrees that Mandy truly made the world a better and brighter place, and they will dearly miss her.”

A celebration of life for the family is scheduled for later this month in Grand Haven.
