According to an article penned for Politico in 2015, Carmack’s first job on Capitol Hill was with McConnell in 1985, and he has held a number of positions for the senator over their decades-long professional relationship.Carmack refused to provide any information regarding McConnell’s condition when questioned by the independent journalist Nicholas Ballasy.Melissa Schultz Bennett, Operations DirectorSalary: $226,850Bennett has served in McConnell's office since 2023, having previously worked as Deputy Chief of Staff to Senator Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio, and as President George W. Bush’s assistant handling appointments and scheduling.Robert Steurer, Senior Communications AdviserSalary: $226,850Steurer has served on McConnell’s team in a communications capacity for over two decades. Like McConnell’s other staff, Steurer has stonewalled journalists when pressed for details on his boss’ condition.Robbin Taylor, State DirectorSalary: $226,850According to her LinkedIn profile, Taylor has served as McConnell’s state director—covering operations in his home state of Kentucky—since 2021, having previously served as his "South Central Kentucky Field Representative" between 1991 and 2000.Prior to her latest stint with his office, Taylor worked in government relations with the firm McCarthy Strategic Solutions, and held a number of positions at Western Kentucky University.Stephanie Penn, Communications DirectorSalary: $214,000Penn began working for McConnell after graduating from the University of Louisville in 2009, according to LegiStorm, becoming the senator’s press secretary in 2015 before her promotion to communications director in October of 2025.Penn has been at the center of much of the criticism being directed at McConnell’s office. She has been filmed on separate occasions declining to answer questions about the senator’s absence, and failing to address concerns over the fact his staff continue to draw salaries while McConnell’s Kentucky constituents are effectively without representation.Elmamoun (Moon) Yousif Sulfab, Systems AdministratorSalary: $143,000Sulfab began working for McConnell in 2007, according to a 2023 profile in The Hill, and was included in the outlet’s list of "notable staffers" for that year.In addition to serving as McConnell’s chief IT manager, Sulfab is also a Ph.D. candidate in Planning, Governance, and Globalization at Virginia Tech’s School of Public and International Affairs.Pressure Mounts on Staff for TransparencyMcConnell has suffered a number of falls and health scares in recent years. According to a statement released by his office on July 12, the senator said his extended absence from Congress was because of a fall and a "mild case of pneumonia.""My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital," the statement read.His office provided a further update in late July, including a picture of the senator dated Sunday, July 26, alongside a statement from his doctor."Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls," the statement read. "His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility. He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office."However, Beshear has continued to press for more information."Gov.
