Hidden Threats Lurking: What Experts Fear After Cyclospora New

Hidden Threats Lurking: What Experts Fear After Cyclospora

Hot off the heels of the cyclospora outbreak, experts worry about what might come next, as they predict we are far from seeing the back of mass cases of foodborne illness. Listeria is the pathogen that keeps Jill Roberts up at night, though she has her eye on five others too."Listeria caused two of the deadliest foodborne outbreaks in the U.S., linked to cantaloupe and queso fresco," Roberts, a professor of public health at the University of South Florida, told Newsweek. "The Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) foodborne surveillance network, PulseNet, played a key role in detecting and stopping both outbreaks."However, with the laboratory currently under-resourced, and the state laboratories that send it data under-resourced, it is not clear if detection of the next Listeria outbreak will occur."That uncertainty sits at the center of a growing alarm among public health experts. After a cyclospora outbreak sickened thousands in the U.S., specialists warn that federal funding cuts have hollowed out the systems built to catch the next, deadlier pathogen before it spreads. Given the warming climate's impact on crops and infectious disease spread, they say, more foodborne outbreaks could be on the way—and the next could be far worse....Central to the U.S.'s food safety system is FoodNet, a CDC program created after four children died from E. coli in the 1990s. Officially called the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, it relies on participating states to contact laboratories for case data signaling emerging problems. But under President Donald Trump's second term, the administration slashed billions of dollars in public health funding. It has also curtailed FoodNet, ending mandatory tracking of Cyclospora and other pathogens. Listeria surveillance under FoodNet, Roberts noted, was "discontinued" last year. The Rise of Foodborne IllnessThe stakes are steep as Listeria kills as many as 30 percent of people diagnosed with it, and infections can bring convulsions, miscarriage and organ-damaging sepsis. Campylobacter, a bacteria tied to raw and undercooked poultry, which sickens roughly 1.5 million Americans a year, is also on the rise. About 60 people were sickened in an Idaho raw milk outbreak this year. A new study conducted by Ineos Oxford Institute researchers recently found that modern poultry farming practices have fueled a more than 100-fold rise in the spread of Campylobacter, making it the world's most common foodborne bacteria.Meanwhile, the ongoing cyclospora outbreak remains unresolved. As of July 13, more than 3,000 cyclosporiasis cases had been reported in Michigan and Ohio, with additional cases in West Virginia and Kentucky. Nationally, the CDC counts more than 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases across 34 states since May 1. Michigan officials suspect lettuce or salad greens, while federal officials expect the outbreak to persist through August as investigators trace the contamination.Against this backdrop, Roberts says that several other pathogens are also on the rise. "Shigella, enterohemorrhagic E. coli, Vibrio, and Yersinia have all increased in recent years," she said. "However, you must interpret this data with caution because laboratory testing has improved greatly." ...Many infections, she said, likely went "undetected" for years but "are of greater impact than previously thought."Shigella has a low infectious dose and is spreading in populations without access to clean food and water, she explained. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli, however, is spreading in raw milk, requiring stronger irrigation-water rules and a raw milk ban, in her view. Vibrio "is spread in raw seafood," the professor added, mostly via raw oysters, while Yersinia "is spread in raw milk and undercooked pork"—both reversible through proper cooking and a raw milk ban, though Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continues to champion the consumption of raw dairy."Any pathogen could cause the next outbreak given the right circumstances," Roberts said. "But, statistically speaking, all roads lead to norovirus. "It is the leading cause of foodborne illness, accounting for more than half of all sicknesses."Norovirus season begins in October. The Foodborne Illnesses That Could Make Headlines NextNorovirus: Roberts' top pick by far. Also called the winter vomiting bug, it is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Listeria: The one the professor said she is "most worried about currently," given it is tied to two of the deadliest U.S. outbreaks on record and its mandatory FoodNet tracking was dropped last year, leaving detection capacity uncertain.Shigella: A group of bacteria that cause shigellosis, which is an infection of the intestines that often presents as diarrhea. It is rising in populations without reliable access to clean food or water, but it has a notably low infectious dose.Enterohemorrhagic E. coli: Spreading via raw produce; Roberts says it calls for stricter irrigation-water regulation and a ban on raw milk products.Vibrio: Linked mostly to raw oysters and other raw seafood; she recommends at-risk individuals avoid raw seafood altogether.Yersinia: Spread through raw milk and undercooked pork; she says proper cooking temperatures and a raw milk ban could reverse any harm.Cyclospora is just one parasite among many capable of hiding in the foods Americans eat every day—and with surveillance weakened and a changing climate reshaping how food grows and disease spreads, experts like Roberts worry that conditions could ripen for something worse. Dr. Ashish Jha's Surprising Shift: Why the Lab Leak Theory Gains Traction New

Dr. Ashish Jha's Surprising Shift: Why the Lab Leak Theory Gains Traction

Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator during the Biden administration, revealed Sunday that he now favors the so-called lab leak theory as the most plausible origin story of the pandemic.“When I went into the White House [in April 2022], my view was, this was almost surely a natural outbreak, maybe a lab leak,” Jha told CNN’s “State of the Union.”“Based on information I learned and based on information I have seen, I have come to conclude that it is more likely to have been a lab leak,” he added. Dr. Ashish Jha argued that the circumstantial evidence favors the lab leak theory. AP“Here’s the bottom line: No one in the United States knows for sure. The only people who know for sure are people — officials in China, and we still need transparency and accountability on that,” concluded Jha, the former dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health.“So that is my best assessment. I’m not suggesting I know for sure, but I’m saying my best assessment is that it probably was a lab leak.”Later Sunday, Jha clarified that he favors the theory that the lab leak was accidental and that he warmed up to it during his time in the Biden administration. Most US experts have universally accused China of not providing sufficient transparency about the origins of COVID-19. REUTERS“Based on strong circumstantial evidence I’ve seen, I think lab leak is much more likely. Not engineered. Not deliberate. Accidental,” he posted on X. “Reasonable people can look at the same evidence and disagree.”The Wuhan Institute of Virology was a top SARS research lab in the Chinese city where the virus originated, and is known to have studied coronaviruses in bats.My view on COVID origins isn't new — I've held it since my time at the White HouseHere's the truth: no one in America knows for sure. Anyone telling you they do is selling you somethingBased on strong circumstantial evidence I've seen, I think lab leak is much more likely.…— Ashish K. Jha (@ashishkjha) August 2, 2026Researchers there are believed to have fallen ill with COVID-19-like symptoms in the fall of 2019 before the outbreak became widespread, according to US intelligence.Republicans such as Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) have crusaded against US funding of so-called gain-of-function research, which can enhance the virulence of viruses during the study of them.Dr. Anthony Fauci, who pleaded the Fifth before a Senate panel last week, had long cast doubt on the lab leak theory. APEarly last year, the CIA concluded in a “low confidence” assessment that a lab leak was the most likely explanation for the origins of COVID-19.The FBI and Energy Department, which manages a network of labs and research facilities across the US, reached a similar conclusion. Many scientists still favor the natural spillover theory and the topic remains hotly debated.

Chris Brown's Latest Concert Stunt Sparks Outrage: What Really Happened? New

Chris Brown's Latest Concert Stunt Sparks Outrage: What Really Happened?

A new, extended video has surfaced from Chris Brown’s recent concert at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, and the footage is causing an even larger stir online. The R&B artist is currently co-headlining The R&B Tour across North America alongside Usher , a 33-date tour scheduled to run from June to December. While VT's earlier report focused on a brief clip of the onstage routine, the longer footage reveals a much more graphic performance that has left internet commentators stunned. The initial discussion surrounding the tour involved an awkward interaction between Usher and a concertgoer named Gabrielle Cheyenne in Nashville, during which she appeared stiff. Cheyenne later defended her response on social media, saying that she had attended the concert specifically to see Brown . She also noted that her energy would have been entirely different with him. Following the weekend performance in Syracuse, it appears she was correct about the stark difference in the routines. The newly released extended footage shows the full scope of what went down when Brown brought an eager female audience member onto the stage. During a performance of his 2007 hit track, 'Take You Down,' the singer took his usual concert routine to an extreme level that many viewers are calling unprecedented for a live music venue. Onstage actions catch viewers by surprise In the original video, Brown can be seen holding the female fan up against a pole and tying her hands to it. The performer then proceeds to move the woman up and down the pole while thrusting toward her. He follows this by kissing her neck, a moment that drew loud cheers from the stadium crowd as the woman smiled and audibly reacted to the physical contact. The explicit nature of the videos has triggered a massive wave of criticism on social media, with thousands of users debating whether the routine crossed a line into inappropriate territory for a public concert. Social media reacts to the graphic footage The clips quickly accumulated millions of views on X, and the comment sections are filled with disbelief. Many onlookers are questioning how stadium security and tour producers permitted such a highly sexualized act to take place on a live stage. One user wrote, "Is this normal dancing or f***ing on broad daylight?" while another remarked, "Concerts have turn into soft p*rn yoo." The standard for what is acceptable at live music events is now being heavily questioned, with another individual asking, "So people pay to watch live action p*rnos?" One particularly disgruntled viewer stated, "People are literally getting f***ed on the f***ing stage bro." Featured image credit: X / @savaty_

Max Miller's Political Future in Jeopardy Amid Explosive Allegations New

Max Miller's Political Future in Jeopardy Amid Explosive Allegations

Republican prospects in Ohio’s 7th Congressional District declined on the prediction market Polymarket after Representative Max Miller vowed on Sunday to remain in the race and denied abuse allegations made by his ex-wife.Miller, a two-term congressman and former White House aide under President Donald Trump, has been involved in an acrimonious legal dispute with his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. He has denied allegations that he abused her or their young daughter. He has not been charged with a crime in connection to the allegations. In a livestream posted Sunday to the social media platform X, Miller strongly rejected the claims." I've been portrayed as an abusive husband, an abusive father, and a violent man. Those allegations have damaged my reputation, caused enormous pain to my family, and most importantly, it's affected our daughter," the congressman said in the video. From being in the low 50s on Sunday morning, Democratic odds on Polymarket surged into the high 60s following Miller's livestream as Republican odds fell from 47 percent to 34 percent, widening a pre-existing gap. The GOP's margin rose slightly by Monday morning.Newsweek contacted a Miller spokesperson for comment via email on Monday, outside of standard office hours....Miller Says He Will Stay in RaceDuring the livestream, Miller framed his reelection bid as a defense of his family and a pushback against media coverage."I'm not getting out of this race, and I'm winning in November," he said, adding that the upcoming election is also about keeping regional values and holding accountable "other individuals... who have been incredibly reckless."Miller also released a collection of documents compiled by his personal attorneys addressing the allegations and ongoing litigation, inviting the public to review them."When adverse parties in litigation are setting themselves on fire, I do not provide them with a fire extinguisher," Subodh Chandra, Emily Moreno's attorney, told Newsweek in a statement on Sunday.Chandra also provided a statement from Moreno’s spokesperson Stefan Mychajliw, that reads:“It is shameful that Max Miller decided to go on a bizarre and lie-filled rant about his ex-wife to desperately try to save his political career. There is a documented trove of evidence that Miller has a history of violent and dangerous behavior and no amount of victim shaming will change that. It is despicable and abhorrent that Miller lied on an unhinged and humiliating video for their daughter to watch one day."No loving parent would have ever used their daughter as a PR pawn to save their own political career. Miller can lie and spin on X, but he cannot do so under oath in a court of law. We are confident that justice will prevail in court.”...Democrats See Opening as GOP Watches RaceAccording to Axios, Wednesday marks Ohio’s deadline for Miller to withdraw in a manner that would automatically trigger a special election to select a replacement on the ballot. While party committees can fill vacancies after that point, they face a 4 p.m. deadline on August 10, after which a withdrawing candidate cannot be replaced. The Associated Press reported that Democrats see an opening in the district—which Miller won with just over 51 percent of the vote two years ago—and have called for his resignation while urging a congressional ethics investigation. While Republican leadership has largely backed Miller, Trump’s inner circle is closely monitoring the situation as the party defends its slim House majority.Trump, who endorsed Miller, told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he would look into the matter.“I’m going to look at it,” he said. “So far, it’s accusations. I’ll be looking at it.”Polling data published by NOTUS on Sunday indicates a tightening race. A survey conducted by a Republican firm on Wednesday and Thursday showed Miller trailing Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter 44 percent to 39 percent, with 16 percent undecided and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 points. The poll also reported that 41 percent of respondents viewed Miller unfavorably, compared to 25 percent favorably.A survey highlighted by the Ohio Democratic Party on June 23 found Miller and Poindexter effectively tied. The poll showed Miller receiving 44 percent support compared with 43 percent for Poindexter. According to the polling data, Poindexter held a 17-point advantage among self-described independents. The survey was conducted by GBAO, a Democratic polling firm, between June 18-20 among 500 likely voters. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. That means Miller's one-point lead falls within the poll's margin of error, making the race statistically tied.Earlier this summer, Cook Political Report moved Ohio's 7th Congressional District from "Solid Republican" to "Likely Republican," signaling that respected election analysts consider the race more competitive than previously believed.Bernie Moreno Calls for Miller’s ResignationThe controversy intensified Sunday when GOP Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno, Miller’s former father-in-law, called for the congressman's resignation in a post on X."The last two years have been pure hell for my wife Bridget, our daughter Emily, me, and our entire family in the aftermath of Emily's divorce," Moreno wrote, adding, "If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives."Miller, meanwhile, hit back at Moreno’s post, writing on X on Sunday: “If my daughter said the same thing to me, I personally wouldn’t wait two years before holding him accountable. You know this isn’t true and the only reason you are speaking out now is to hide from your own media circus. This is all political.”Contact Newsweek editors for this story: Tobias Meyjes and Anthony Murray.

Chaos Erupts at Spider-Man Screening as Unexpected Incident Forces Evacuation

Not even “spidey sense” could have prevented this odiferous attack.A “Spider-Man” screening in Cartagena, Colombia was evacuated after one of the audience members suffered from an extreme fart attack. The gas leak occurred on August 2 on “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” at the Cine Colombia multiplex inside the Plaza Bocagrande shopping center, Jam Press reported.A theater in Cartagena, Colombia was cleared after an unidentified audience member suffered from a bout of extreme farting during a screening of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” JamPressFilm-goers, including a Spider-Man cosplayer, stand in the lobby following the mid-film fart attack. JamPressEverything was going swimmingly until halfway through the film, when a flatulent film-goer decided to let er’ rip.The theater-goer’s proverbial Pumpkin Bomb filled the darkened auditorium with a horrible odor, prompting audience members to flee their seats in disgust.Hundreds of film fans were reportedly evacuated into the hallway. Footage shows the aghast film fans milling about in the corridor alongside someone dressed in a Spiderman suit. While the screening was not officially canceled, droves of viewers decided to leave before the end credits on account of the stench. As of yet, the culprit has not been identified, although reports claimed they either detonated a stink bomb as a prank or didn’t make it to the bathroom in time.An aghast audience member covers her nose and mouth. JamPressMany viewers ripped the filmgoer for cutting the cheese during a screening.“There’s no respect anymore, but I don’t think anyone is so rotten as to evacuate an entire auditorium,” said one.Another wrote, “To ruin a whole cinema like that, only God knows what that person ate.”Others labeled the anonymous wind breaker the film’s real “villain.”The movie itself, on the other hand, is fortunately not such a stinker, according to critics. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland in his fourth outing as the friendly neighborhood web-slinger, was voted “certified fresh” by 90% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes and by 98% of audience members.Post movie critic Johnny Oleksinski dubbed the movie tonally similar to the Tobey Maguire franchise of the 2000s, which he called not only the gold standard of “Spider-Man” movies, but Marvel films as well.”“Brand New Day” also delivered at the box office, raking in $927m in worldwide ticket sales, the Guardian reported. This haul was the second most successful opening weekend of any film domestically and globally.

Chris Brown's Steamy Concert Moment Leaves Fans Stunned New

Chris Brown's Steamy Concert Moment Leaves Fans Stunned

Chris Brown has raised some eyebrows after his performance at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York, after simulating sex with a fan. The 'Loyal' artist is currently on tour with Usher as part of the R&B Tour across North America, featuring 33 dates and running from June to December this year. In fact, Usher made headlines last month after bringing a female audience member up on stage to share a steamy moment, but it quickly turned awkward. A shirtless Usher sang to the fan, later named as Gabrielle Cheyenne , as she appeared less than impressed, staying stiff and giving him a tight smile. Despite the 'Yeah!' artist's best attempts to salvage the performance, he waved her off stage following the uncomfortable exchange , where she refused to join him on an onstage bed. She later claimed that she was only at the show to see Brown. Over the weekend, it was Brown who made headlines on their tour, though it wasn't for the same reason. Chris Brown's steamy exchange with a fan did the rounds on social media. Credit: X Chris Brown's steamy onstage interaction Unlike Usher, Brown sparked conversation online after getting up close and personal with a female fan onstage. Like his tour buddy, the R&B artist usually invites an audience member up during his shows to share a charged moment during a rendition of his 2007 hit, 'Take You Down'. And on Saturday night, Brown invited an eager fan up and held her up against a pole, tying her hands to it as he held her up. The artist took it a step further, moving her up and down the pole as he thrust towards her, before starting to kiss her neck, which prompted cheers from the crowd. That's not to say that she didn't enjoy it either, as she could be seen with a daring smile while letting out a moan as he laid one on her neck. A seven-second clip of the exchange has gone viral on X, garnering over 8.3 million views, which has unsurprisingly resulted in thousands of comments being made. If that wasn't enough, clips from other parts of the segment show Brown licking the sweat off her body while she's tied up. Reaction from viewers One shocked X user commented: "Is this normal dancing or f***ing on broad daylight?" as another added: "Concerts have turn into soft p*rn yoo." A third joked: "I see why that girl at the Usher show was p**sed she didn’t get Chris Brown looool," while someone else also quipped: "That’s how that one girl thought her night was gonna be but got Usher lmaooooooooo." A different user asked: "So people pay to watch live action p*rnos?" "People are literally getting f***ed on the f***ing stage bro," one disgruntled viewer wrote in the comments. Divorce Party Bombshell: What Left Guests in Shock? New

Divorce Party Bombshell: What Left Guests in Shock?

Her lips are sealed. One newly liberated woman not only threw herself a divorce party, but she put her husband’s wrongdoings on blast for guests to read and weep — and people online are losing their minds over it. Content creator Abbey Wellman posted a TikTok video in June that has since gone massively viral of a poster board resting on a Chicago bar’s counter listing the “10 worst things” her ex-husband did during their marriage. With dramatic music in the background helping to set the scene, the 60-second clip shows guest after guest reading the poster, looking beyond horrified, many with their jaws on the floor. Even the bartender working the party did a double-take when reading the list. The video has received over 30 million views and almost 45,000 comments from people on the edge of their seats, desperate to figure out what is on the board. The Post reached out to the creator for comment.“My fomo is horrendous rn,” one admitted.“Girl if you don’t show us the damn board…” another demanded. Some even attempted to screenshot the video and zoom in, but were left with nothing but a blurry image, which just further disappointed them. The reactions to what was on the board are priceless. Abbey Wellman / TikTokOne commenter related to the situation, claiming her list (if she were to make one) would be even worse, writing, “Omg if I made a list it would be so much worse this is cake.”“Ok we need to know,” another demanded. In a recent follow-up video, joining in on the Beyoncé “I didn’t have a pen and paper” trend, Wellman provided some insight into why she has yet to post the juicy tea, despite the internet’s desperate demands.“When I had a divorce party and it went viral but I’m legally not allowed to post the board,” she wrote in overlay text. Well, this explanation didn’t feed the hungry commenters who continued to hilariously beg to see the list. Clearly, guests couldn’t believe what they were reading. Abbey Wellman / TikTok“I’ll sign a NDA just to know lol,” one joked. “Wait you’re in Chicago I’ll literally buy you drinks i need to know,” one bribed.“What if a guest from the party post a story on Reddit with bullet points,” another suggested. As juicy as this specific story is, divorce parties are becoming somewhat of a trend amongst newly single women. One woman posted a video of herself burning her marriage certificate at her party, while another had a dress code for guests, where everyone wore “past versions of her ex-husband.”

Trump's Bold Claim: Iran Talks on the Brink or Just a Mirage?

The Iranian government flat-out rejected President Trump’s claim that new negotiations were due to get underway later Monday, with officials stating that no talks were taking place or scheduled.Trump, 80, told reporters en route to Washington Sunday night that he had called off a planned “massive attack” on Iran at the request of US partners in the region — including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.“They thought that a deal is imminent,” said the president, later adding: “Now what we’re doing is talking to them [Iran], in the form of a negotiation. On several occasions, Trump has threatened military action only to later cite diplomatic contacts as a reason for stepping back.Iran, however, has publicly rejected negotiations with Washington since a June memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict collapsed in early July. The dispute over the Strait of Hormuz remains a central point of contention. Washington says the June memorandum required Iran to open the strategically vital waterway, while Tehran argues the text explicitly preserved its authority over shipping traffic. That would leave Tehran with greater leverage over the strait than before the war, a result that would be seen as a significant setback for Trump. So far the United States has failed to compel Iran to relinquish its grip on the waterway, sending global oil prices higher and pushing up politically sensitive gasoline prices in the United States.Oil prices fell on Monday after Trump’s latest decision to hold back from military action, with Brent crude futures down more than 4% to around $84 a barrel. In the latest reported incident in the strait, the British maritime security body UKMTO said overnight that the master of a vessel had reported an explosion in the water near the ship. No one was hurt. With Post wires
