The Doctor's Words That Echoed Before Her Final Moment New

The Doctor's Words That Echoed Before Her Final Moment

A prominent Dutch psychiatrist is facing intense public scrutiny following revelations regarding his practice of administering lethal injections to patients suffering from severe mental health issues, including teenagers. Dr. Menno Oosterhoff, who specializes in child and adolescent psychiatry, has assisted patients with terminating their lives for several years, The Atlantic reports . While the procedure is legal under specific guidelines in the Netherlands, his actions have sparked a fierce debate across Europe regarding the ethics of psychiatric euthanasia. The legal framework for medically assisted suicide in the Netherlands was established by lawmakers in 2002. Under this law, physicians are permitted to grant euthanasia requests provided they are voluntary, well-considered, and stem from unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement or reasonable alternative solutions. Dr. Oosterhoff primarily handles individuals who do not possess physical disabilities, operating under the belief that providing an authorized path for those with terminal mental diagnoses helps prevent unassisted suicide and shortens prolonged suffering. Public opinion on the matter remains deeply divided. While some supporters view the psychiatrist as a compassionate figure who helps individuals facing desperate circumstances, critics have raised significant alarms. The conversation intensified nationwide following a public television broadcast titled "Milou's Battle Continues," which detailed the experience of a 17-year-old girl who sought out Dr. Oosterhoff to end her life. Milou Verhoof died by euthanasia at the age of 17. Credit: NPO The doctor's last words to the teen The teenager, Milou Verhoof, sought assistance after experiencing years of severe trauma, including a sexual assault at age 13 and a near-fatal illness affecting her brother. Following multiple suicide attempts and lengthy delays from other medical professionals, she met with Dr. Oosterhoff. On October 2, 2023, the procedure was carried out in her childhood bedroom. Before administering the injection, Dr. Oosterhoff said (per The Manchester Evening News ) to Milou, "Girl, have a good trip," in front of her parents. At her funeral, he later noted, "You've been through so much," to express sympathy for her long struggles. Her mother, Mireille Verhoof, defended the decision in an email correspondence, stating, "Because of Dr. Oosterhoff's extremely careful and cautious approach, we as parents trusted that his conclusion-that Milou truly could not go on and that the days were unliveable for her-was the only correct one and confirmed what we as parents had long seen in our child." This case highlights a broader statistical shift in the country of 18 million people. Though the vast majority of the 9,958 euthanasia cases in 2024 involved terminal physical ailments, psychiatric euthanasia instances grew from 88 in 2020 to 219 in 2024. Legal challenges and debate in Spain The discussion surrounding medically assisted death has also intensified in other parts of Europe, notably following a high-profile case in Spain involving a 25-year-old woman named Noelia Castillo Ramos. She became quadriplegic in 2024 after jumping from a building following a gang rape. Before her scheduled procedure, she gave a final television interview, declaring, "I have four days left because on the 26 they will perform euthanasia on me," which brought widespread attention to the legal battle over her choice. Her father strongly fought the decision in court, arguing that his daughter suffered from a personality disorder and was dependent on the state mental healthcare system prior to her assault. Castillo Ramos expressed that the legal opposition from her family increased her emotional pain, noting that none of her relatives supported her path. She defended her autonomy by asking, "None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. I am a pillar of the family. I leave them suffering. But what about my suffering?" She further argued that "The happiness of a father, a mother, or a sister should not be more important than that of a daughter or the life of a daughter," before her legal termination was ultimately carried out. Why Gen Z Is Officially Ditching This Millennial Fashion Staple New

Why Gen Z Is Officially Ditching This Millennial Fashion Staple

It’s Z fitness fashion faux pas of the day. After reigning as choice activewear for 20-something years, 20-somethings online have officially declared workout leggings “dead.”RIP to the grip. Rather than breaking a sweat in the skintight togs, gym rat Gen Zs now prefer loose-fitting, baggy sweatpants or shorts while exercising, according to a recent report by Edited, a retail analysis group.Gen Z gym buffs are ditching fitted leggings for baggy, loose-fitting sweats and shorts. BullRun – stock.adobe.comBut the youngsters’ sudden aversion to leggings — a millennial fashion fav — is less about style, and more about their self-image issues. “I’m so embarrassed and insecure about wearing leggings,” confessed a body-conscious belle in a trending clip. “I hate how they fit me, how they’re so tight on me and you can see, like, the structure of my legs.”Online, young women claim that their hate for leggings in rooted in body-image issues. opolja – stock.adobe.comThose groans were echoed by a sea of Gen Zs who agreed, commenting, “Leggings are so uncomfortable,” “I f- -king hate leggings,” and “It’s body dysmorphia.”And their beef with the bottoms isn’t just idle internet chatter — it’s evident in sales and web searches, too.  Researchers for Edited found that consumer interest in leggings has plummeted from 46.9% to 38.7% since 2022. Due to the drop in demand, top athletic brands such as Nike and adidas have “scaled back leggings investment” this year. (Lululemon fans can breathe easy as the Canadian imprint is still investing in the snug head-turners, per the findings).Athleisure lovers, namely fashionistas under age 27, are instead reaching for billowing, “boxy” garb, according to Pinterest data featured in the study. New data reveals that young adults are buying “boxy,” oversized workout wear for comfort. pressmaster – stock.adobe.comInvestigators noted that, “58% of searches are from the 18 to 24 year-old demographic with popular pins showing oversized sweatpants and boxy T-shirts.” The experts attribute the rising fondness for lightweight, looser-fitting pants to Gen Z’s preference for comfort over compression, as well as the influence of baggy clothes icons Billie Eilish and Zendaya. But team Z’s loathing of leggings is nothing new. Tastemakers like Billie Eilish and Zendaya have been hailed the de facto leaders in the loose-fit over leggings charge. Ulia Koltyrina – stock.adobe.comThe whiny whippersnappers have attempted to “cancel” the Y2K-wardrobe staple for years, deeming them “cringe” and “cheugy” in viral vids. They’ve tried exalting yoga pants or “flared leggings” to the original look’s former glory.  But, thus far, no bottoms have truly unseated the tried-and-true legging. But now, some Gen Zs are hoping workout shorts will finally give the clinging gear a run for their money. “As a gym girlie, one thing about me is, I’m a shorts girlie until the end of time,” vowed Danica, a TikTok fit-influencer. “B—ch, I promise you, once you put on a good pair of shorts, you are never going to touch your leggings again.”Em, a dietician and trainer, separately voiced similar sentiments, saying, “I feel so cute, sexy, hot, confident when I wear shorts to the gym.”“But leggings, I hate.”

Mass Layoffs Ahead: Which Companies Are Cutting Jobs Next? New

Mass Layoffs Ahead: Which Companies Are Cutting Jobs Next?

A new month is bringing a fresh wave of job cuts across the United States, with multiple employers reporting layoffs scheduled to take effect in August, according to recent public Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings. WARN notices are typically required when companies with 100 or more employees plan a mass layoff or plant closing affecting at least 50 workers. These are some of the companies planning layoffs in August. Why It MattersThe labor market has remained relatively resilient in 2026, but layoffs continue across a range of industries from technology and retail to manufacturing and healthcare. Because WARN notices are often filed weeks before layoffs take effect, they can provide an early indication of workforce reductions to come....Companies Reporting August LayoffsThe following companies have WARN-tracked layoffs scheduled to take effect in August:Prairie Farms DairyElite Comfort SolutionsNBCUniversalILPEA IndustriesRed Lobster6th Street Center for YouthIndependence Premium FoodsSDH Education EastExpeditors International of WashingtonJoymarkGeneral DynamicsAmazonT&H ServicesLaboure College of HealthcareBrandFXMV TransportationFedExLevi Strauss & CoSunrise TransportationWalmartRetail giant Walmart has several California WARN notices scheduled for August 21, affecting workers in San Bruno and multiple Sunnyvale locations. The layoff filings range from one worker to dozens per site, with a San Bruno filing affecting 88 employees and several Sunnyvale notices affecting between 49 and 68 workers. There are many factors that have contributed to the layoffs nationwide, and much of it comes down to broader business uncertainty and a job market that has exited a rapid expansion phase, experts say."While everyone from lawmakers to economists will blame certain factors, the primary reason behind all finger-pointing is ultimately uncertainty," Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor for the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek."The good news is the labor market has proven to be largely resilient over the last year, but the sectors seeing employment gains are increasingly uneven.”What Is the WARN Act?The federal WARN Act generally requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' advance notice before a plant closure or mass layoff affecting at least 50 workers. The law is intended to give workers time to prepare for job loss and seek alternative employment opportunities. However, states like California and New York have expanded protections through state-level WARN statutes, which can require notices in circumstances beyond just federal law. What Workers Should KnowA WARN notice does not necessarily mean a company-wide restructuring. Many of the filings are related to specific offices or business units. Notices can also be reduced or rescinded. "From continued inflationary pressures weighing on their customers to whether or not AI can fulfill its financial potential of significant savings, the concern over not knowing what economically is to come can lead to fewer new positions being created," Beene said. "These layoffs do not yet signal a collapsing labor market, but they do suggest it is becoming a ‘low-hire, low-fire’ economy."What Happens NextLayoffs have continued to make headlines across industries, but public WARN data also shows that many employers are restructuring specific business units or locations rather than implementing companywide cuts. The next major signals for the labor market will come from upcoming federal employment reports, which will more fully show whether job growth is keeping pace with layoffs and if unemployment remains near recent levels."Layoffs will likely keep continuing unemployment claims near current levels and reduce consumer spending at the margin," Kevin Thompson, the CEO of 9i Capital Group and the host of the 9innings podcast, told Newsweek. "However, much of that decline in discretionary spending is offset by higher prices for non-discretionary goods and services."Contact Newsweek editors on this story: Jason Lemon and Gray R. Thomas

High Stakes: Could Tennessee's First Female Execution in 200 Years Turn Tragic? New

High Stakes: Could Tennessee's First Female Execution in 200 Years Turn Tragic?

A warning has been issued over lethal injections, ahead of Christa Gail Pike's execution on September 30, 2026. It's been over three decades since PIke was sentenced to death after she was found guilty of killing 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, aged just 18. Pike is the only female on death row in the US state, and is set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee for over 200 years. It's said that she had become jealous of her boyfriend at the time, believing that Slemmer was interested in him while they were part of the Knoxville Job Corps program. She would respond by murdering her classmate, using a cleaver, a box cutter, and a piece of asphalt after luring her to the woods, beating and stabbing her before carving a pentagram into her chest. Pike is also serving time for the attempted murder of an inmate in 2004. Now, an expert has highlighted the risks of using lethal injections as a method of death, weeks before Pike is executed. Credit: the Tennessee Department of Correction Warning over the lethal injection Pike is set to die by lethal injection, despite her protests, in a method which has been criticized over the years by experts. Matt Wells, the Deputy Director of Reprieve US , a non-profit organization that fights for justice for marginalized people who are facing human rights abuses, claims that the method isn't clean-cut. Speaking to UNILAD , Wells explained: "Two months ago, Tony Carruthers was strapped to a gurney for over an hour while prison staff stabbed him with needles more than a dozen times as they failed to establish an IV line." Due to medics failing to find a vein, his execution had to be halted, with some describing the situation as "barbaric," with the inmate forced to endure intense pain for over an hour. Wells claimed that this wasn't the only occasion, adding: "Our research showed that more than a quarter of botched lethal injections in the modern era lasted over an hour." He said that Tennessee going ahead with the method after torturing Carruthers was "beyond belief," further adding: "There is a high risk that Christa Pike could suffer a prolonged and agonizing death." He also claimed that US states go out of their way to "hide information about executions," to trick the American public into thinking that the lethal injection is humane. Wells stated: "The reality is there is no such thing." Her attorney, Stephen Ferrell, also raised concerns about Pike's blood condition, thrombocytopenia, which can lead to excessive bleeding, while pointing out her small veins. "The difficulty establishing IV lines is a known complication that has caused prolonged and botched executions for years," Ferrell pointed out, while also making a special request to the state. Christa Pike is facing execution in September. Credit: Death Penalty Information Center Pike has been appointed a "special master" Shelby County Senior Judge Mark Ward has been appointed as special master by the Tennessee Supreme Court ahead of Pike's execution. Ward's job will be to assess whether the execution is constitutional, as Pike's legal team has spoken at length about the 50-year-old's physical and mental health. He will also decide whether Pike will undergo too much pain during execution, going through options alongside the inmate's Buddhist advisor with her. But with Ward being appointed, the case has become the first of its kind in Tennessee to have a special master involved. Featured image credit: The Tennessee Department of Correction

FIFA's $20B Plan Collapses Amid European Boycott Threats New

FIFA's $20B Plan Collapses Amid European Boycott Threats

FIFA’s controversial plan to sell a piece of its business empire to outside investors has collapsed following an open revolt by soccer officials worldwide — and a major rift among top FIFA executives, The Post has learned.FIFA had aimed to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling a roughly 20 percent stake in the group, valuing the new arm at $20 billion. The deal, which involved a firm run by New York venture capitalist Joshua Kushner, is dead, four sources familiar with the matter said.“They are not the feeling this. There is no way they want to continue to be involved in this mess,” said a source briefed on the collapsed deal. “Kushner will figure out another way to get involved in this space. This is becoming a brand nightmare.”FIFA’s $20 billion plan to sell a stake in its commercial rights to Joshua Kushner’s firm has collapsed after threats of a European World Cup boycott. Getty ImagesKushner is the brother of Jared Kushner, the White House diplomatic adviser and son-in-law of Donald TrumpThe unraveling caps a brutal week for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who pushed the plan to spin off FIFA’s commercial rights into a new for-profit arm that drew howls of protest across Europe and a slew of overwhelmingly negative media coverage. The failed proposal called for FIFA, a nonprofit under Swiss law, to transfer its cash-making assets — TV rights, sponsor deals, licensing, and ticketing — into a new entity called FIFA Forward Enterprise.Kushner’s firm, Thrive Capital, was set to anchor the deal, with JPMorgan advising.Infantino gave FIFA’s 211 member nations until Sept. 19 to back the deal, dangling payouts of up to $40 million each. Critics called it a bribe with a deadline. But FIFA and its bankers badly misread the mood in Europe, where the sport’s richest clubs and leagues bring in most of the game’s revenue.“This would be the (temporary) end of global football,” one insider close to Infantino said.Joshua Kushner is the brother of White House diplomatic adviser and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Broadcasters won’t pay top dollar, and sponsors will pull their cash. That gutted the deal’s value.“They tested the waters and have a clear response,” one source, speaking on condition of anonymity, close to Infantino told The Post.Thrive has already begun talks about dropping the idea, three sources said. JPMorgan does not expect the deal to go through, according the insiders. closing their files. The collapse of the deal caps a brutal week for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who planned to spin off FIFA’s commercial rights that led to protests and negative media coverage across Europe. REUTERS“They don’t believe Kushner will stay the course,” said one person directly briefed on the matter. “They are pulling the plug.” Even as the deal collapsed behind the scenes, FIFA publicly insisted Friday that “nobody is selling football. With outside money off the table, FIFA will keep selling its own rights in-house, pointing to its money-spinning haul from this summer’s 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. One source close to the ill-fated deal said the Zurich-based organization could try way of “formalizing and using their assets in a commercial way” through its existing non-profit entity.“I think they are trying to professionalize some of aspects of world football,” the person briefed on the matter said. The deal’s death sends a clear message to private equity firms circling global sports: Soccer’s political walls remain high.Infantino’s reign as FIFA president is up in the air after this latest disaster. Members of FIFA’s North American bloc, Concacaf, rejected the plan. On Friday, the Asian Football Confederation joined the opposition. The backlash also reached Infantino’s inner circle.FIFA Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour told The Associated Press on Friday that senior staff felt “deceived” by Infantino’s lack of transparency.“The project that has sparked so much controversy and debate is not a FIFA project,” Lamour said. “It is the project of one person.”Lamour blasted a “lie by omission over many months,” adding that the ordeal showed “a lack of trust, a lack of transparency, a lack of discernment, a lack of good governance. And a serious lack of respect.”He acknowledged his outspokenness could lead to his firing.“Then so be it,” he said. “At least I’ll sleep well tonight.”Also on Friday, Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s senior adviser and a former Goldman Sachs partner, resigned over the proposal.“I cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup,” Cordeiro said in a statement. Many member nations view the fight as a vote of confidence ahead of March’s presidential election.UEFA is quietly hunting for a challenger, with Paris Saint-Germain chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi drawing strong backing. At least 20 nations are reportedly discussing pulling their letters of support for Infantino.Lamour, the FIFA executive, all but urged them on, saying “the time has now come for football political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions.”

Danny DeVito's Surprising Reason for Staying Married After Nine-Year Separation

Despite separating almost a decade ago, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman have no intention of officially ending their marriage, with the pair remaining incredibly close and continuing to spend plenty of time together. Nine years after going their separate ways, DeVito revealed that the former couple still speak every day and regularly get together with their family, even sharing meals at each other's homes. Credit: Michael Kovac/WireImage/Getty “We’re always over at her house,” DeVito, who shares children Lucy, 43, Grace, 41, and Jacob, 38, with Perlman, told AARP: The Magazine. “We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff.” Reflecting on their bond, the 81-year-old added: “So that’s a good relationship.” Although their romantic relationship has ended, DeVito said their commitment to family has remained unchanged. “No matter what happens in your life, the most important thing is having family and friends,” he said. “Reliable people in our lives who we can talk to, who we can open up to, who we can rely on to be there. I’m very fortunate.” The couple's relationship The pair have shared most of their lives together. They first crossed paths in 1971 when Perlman attended an off-Broadway production featuring DeVito before the group headed out together afterwards. Looking back on that first meeting, DeVito said they immediately “hit it off.” “We liked off-Broadway stuff,” he recalled. “We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together—short films.” The couple married in 1982 and went on to star alongside one another in several projects. “We had a lot in common, and we fell in love,” DeVito said. “A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked and she ate.” DeVito and Perlman first separated in 2012 before ending their relationship for good in 2017. While they have remained close friends, Perlman previously admitted the transition wasn't easy. “It was very difficult at first,” the 78-year-old said during a 2023 appearance on Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Wiser Than Me podcast. “It took time for us to come to this, somehow, pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other.” She also stressed that, despite their split, their family continues to come first. “We see each other a lot,” Perlman said. “And our family is still the most important thing to both of us. Trump's Unexpected Moment at Funeral Sparks Online Frenzy New

Trump's Unexpected Moment at Funeral Sparks Online Frenzy

Donald Trump has found himself at the center of a bizarre online storm after footage from a high-profile funeral led social media users to make wild claims about an alleged foul smell inside a cathedral. The US leader was allegedly the dealer of a bum note at former South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral, and, no, he wasn’t the organ player. Credit: Andrew Harnik/Getty Images The 80-year-old US president attended a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral alongside American officials and international dignitaries to remember Graham, who died unexpectedly earlier this month following an aortic rupture. Although Trump was seated prominently in the front row, many viewers online became focused on the person sitting directly behind him, who appeared to react to something unusual during the ceremony. Sharing the clip on X, formerly Twitter, a journalist wrote: “Look at the guy behind Trump (who is asleep). It smells crazy back there.” The video quickly spread across social media, with users speculating about what may have caused the man's reaction and making unverified jokes about the president. One person wrote: “Even at Lindsey Graham's funeral, Donald Trump s**** his pants. The poor secret service agent behind him looks like he is going to die.” Another joked: “Oh man that dude sniffed deep there for a second. Probably burned out some taste buds there my dude.” A further comment added: “You know Trump smells something fierce when the guy behind him has to clench his teeth and nose to soften the odor.” However, there is no evidence to confirm the reason behind the man's expression, while the White House rejected other claims circulating online that Trump had fallen asleep during the service. White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told The Independent: “President Trump was reflecting on the loss of his dear friend Lindsey Graham, who he just delivered a beautiful eulogy to. Anyone suggesting otherwise is a depraved moron.” Trump's health faces scrutiny online The incident comes as Trump continues to face scrutiny over his health following his return to the Oval Office. Previous claims about the president's condition have circulated online, including comments from physical therapist Adam James, who previously suggested Trump was “not going to be around much longer.” James alleged that the president has congestive heart failure (CHF) and chronic kidney failure, though those claims have not been independently verified or confirmed by official medical records. The healthcare professional also claimed Trump could be receiving IV diuretics, medications that help remove excess fluid from the body by increasing urine production. James said: “I have just received a DM from a source who confirmed for me that the President consistently smells like urine because of his urinary incontinence.” He added: “This is on top of his bowel incontinence that he's been famous for, for years. The source also states that the President is receiving daily IV medications. This explains why his hands bruise so frequently.” James continued: “Diuretics pull fluids off your body by acting on your kidneys and making you pee a lot more. This would explain why he is peeing all the time on himself and smells like pee.” The allegations made by James have not been verified. Featured Image. Credit: Andrew Harnik/Getty Images

SpaceX's Unexpected Lunar Crash: Will You Witness the Spectacle? New

SpaceX's Unexpected Lunar Crash: Will You Witness the Spectacle?

It’s one small crash for man.Just months after the historic Artemis II Mission, humanity will witness yet another trip to the moon on August 5. But this time, the lunar landing is unplanned — our rocky satellite will be impacted by an errant component from a SpaceX craft. The upper stage of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 will collide with the moon on August 5, affording astronomers an opportunity to study the real-time effects of a lunar impact. NASA via Getty ImagesAs predicted months ago, the upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket is a week away from colliding with the moon at more than seven times the speed of sound. The impact will add a new crater to its pockmarked surface and kick up a dust plume that will potentially be visible from Earth, USA Today reported. Coincidentally, this collision course marks a return for the spacecraft, which was part of the launch that sent two landers — the Blue Ghost-1 by Texas-based firm Firefly and Japan’s Resilience — to the moon on Jan. 15, 2025, according to Space.com.A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is displayed at a SpaceX facility on April 2, 2026 in Hawthorne, California. Getty ImagesWith its mission complete, the 8,800-pound uncrewed spacecraft part lacked the fuel to return to Earth or move into deep space. Instead it remained in orbital limbo until gravity slingshotted it toward the moon, where it is slated to crash on the near side the Einstein crater on August 5.While permanently reshaping the moon’s surface is not ideal, the unplanned journey to the moon will afford scientists the rare opportunity to study the real-time effects of a lunar impact. As part of a non-peer-reviewed study published in preprint server arxiv, University of Texas grad student William Jo used a special physics simulation to model the collision. His team predicted that the debris column will have a central ejecta spike reaching between 47 miles and over 60 miles high.Spectators at Kennedy Point Park in Titusville watch the Launch and booster landing of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying a national security payload designed, built and operated by the National Reconnaissance Organization. USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectMeanwhile, new research led by New Mexico planetary scientist Benjamin Fernando suggested that the impact crater would be around 66-to-98 feet wide — which is sizable but smaller than an asteroid-induced pockmark because the spacecraft is hollowBut will we be able to see the flash from the crash? It’s hard to say.“Watching this one gives us a rare chance to open up ejecta-plume science and calibrate those models against a real event, which matters for every future thing we deliver to the moon,” said Jo. NASA via Getty Images“Our calculations suggest the plume should be several orders of magnitude brighter than the dark-sky background for the first few minutes after impact,” Jo told Space.com. “So the plume should be visible, though I’d stress this is a single nominal case. The real one will look different, and the numbers are on the optimistic side.”Meanwhile, Fernando’s team determined that the both the flash and debris plume will be “potentially observable” from terrestrial and space-based facilities.A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station July 21, 2026. USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectThe researchers noted that the degree of visibility is “imprecisely predicted at present,” although the study authors note it could be a tad faint for moongazers armed with regular telescopes.“it will probably be at least worth taking a look,” said study co-author Bill Gray, an astronomer who writes the Project Pluto orbital tracking software. “Maybe we’ll see the flash. Maybe we’ll see rocks ejected from the crater. Maybe we’ll even see both.”For many researchers, the event’s visibility is beside the point. The fallout from a lunar impact will shed important light on dust and plume effects from such collisions, and potential hazards that moon-bound space junk poses to future lunar missions, among other factors.“Watching this one gives us a rare chance to open up ejecta-plume science and calibrate those models against a real event, which matters for every future thing we deliver to the moon,” said Jo.Thankfully, the collision doesn’t pose a threat to people, and won’t significantly reshape the lunar surface, Gray wrote on his website. However, he noted that the upcoming event does highlight a “certain carelessness about how leftover space hardware (space junk) is disposed of.”This study could be particularly important as SpaceX develops a much larger Starship Rocket for future missions to the moon.

Teen's Mysterious Disappearance Sparks Fears of Dangerous Reunion New

Teen's Mysterious Disappearance Sparks Fears of Dangerous Reunion

The mother of a California teen allegedly raped by his juvenile hall therapist said her son has run away from home — and she fears he may be visiting the clinician in violation of court orders.Former jail counselor Sofia Drotts, 26, of San Francisco, is free on bail after she was hit Monday with a slew of felony charges, including unlawful sexual intercourse, related to her relationship with the teen. Drotts was arrested two weeks ago for allegedly grooming and raping the teenager, whom she counseled at a Contra Costa County juvenile hall.Former juvenile hall therapist Sofia Drotts is accused of grooming and raping a teen boy. licdm.comAfter his release, she is accused of secretly posing as his teenage girlfriend and using a burner phone to stay in contact with him.The unidentified boy’s distraught mom told The California Post that her 17-year-old son may have decided to go back to his former therapist. The teen, who believes the relationship between him and Drotts was consensual, went missing when the therapist was nabbed by cops, his mom said.“He just left,” said the concerned mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her son’s identity.“I don’t know where he is. I hope he’s not with her.”The boy’s mother is afraid her son has run off to be with Drotts. NBC Bay AreaDrotts is a University of Wisconsin grad. Instagram/uwmadisonlsShe added that her son had been in constant contact with Drotts since his April release and that he was on a video call with her at the exact moment she was arrested by Concord Police. The mom alleged that Drotts painstakingly groomed the teen for more than two years while she provided therapy, duping the family into thinking she was a concerned caregiver.Instead of Drotts treating the the teen, his mom claimed, the therapist conned the boy into falling for her.“She was very professional, very caring,” the mother explained. “Like she always had my son’s best interest at heart.”She had no idea Drotts was allegedly victimizing her son until the arrest.   When she confronted her son, he said the allegations were false. The juvenile hall where Drotts was assigned as the boy’s therapist. contracostaprobation.ca.govDrotts is a Spanish speaker from Chicago. Her Campus“What if it was consensual?” the teen asked his stunned mother. The boy then ran off and hasn’t been seen by his family since — except for one occasion when he stopped home to take a shower and cut off his ankle monitor, his mom said.He also missed a probationary court date and a warrant has been issued for his arrest, she added.Drotts did not return calls for comment. She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment on charges including sexual penetration by a foreign object, sending harmful matter to a minor, oral copulation of a person under 18 years of age and possessing child pornography. She has retained a private attorney, who declined to comment on the case.  The boy’s mom said she was duped by Drotts. NBC Bay AreaAttorney John Burris represents the victim’s family in a civil case. bnclawfirm.comInvestigators say Drotts began grooming the boy in 2024, when he was 14 or 15 years old.At the time, the boy — identified as John Doe in court papers — was serving two years in a Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall, where Drotts was assigned as his therapist.“During the two years in which Doe was incarcerated at the juvenile Hall, Drotts abused her position as his therapist to establish an inappropriate emotional connection with Doe, ‘grooming’ him with the objective of sexual abuse,” court papers state. After the boy was released on probation, Drotts continued to serve as his therapist through Contra Costa Health and allegedly had “unlawful sexual contact” with him, the court papers say.Drotts was arrested by Concord police. Facebook/Concord Police DepartmentThe documents also state that a “team of County agents and supervisors failed to identify the red flags or supervise Drotts, and so the sexual abuse continued.”Attorney John Burris, who is representing the boy’s family in a civil suit against Contra Costa County County, said supervisors failed to protect the boy from Drotts.“We’re very hopeful that a significant conviction occurs, to send a clear message to the to the young man that there’s this is not a love affair — no matter what your feelings are,” Burris said. “The young man is emotionally torn up over this.”According to posts on social media and content published on a college publication website, Drotts is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The college heaped praise on Drotts in a 2022 Instagram post that identified her as a psychology major with certificates in criminal justice, gender and women studies, and chicano/a latino/a studies.“After graduation, she’s off to the Golden State to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Palo Alto University,” the post read. “Way to go, Sofia!”Drotts identified herself as a Spanish speaker and Chicago native on an author page for a publication to which she contributed a number of articles on college life.Drotts is due back in court again in August. Spain's Chaotic Showdown: What Trump Isn't Backing Down On New

Spain's Chaotic Showdown: What Trump Isn't Backing Down On

"Viva España!" some of the migrants shouted to a freelance photographer as they came around the Tarajal breakwater into Ceuta, the Spanish enclave on Morocco's northern coast.Watching from the Spanish side, Rachid Sbihi, head of the association representing Civil Guard officers in Ceuta, expressed sentiments heralding the death of Spain instead. "Absolute chaos," he said, adding that the border had "totally collapsed."Confidence in Spain and the collapse of Spanish control, in a single moment. That collision is the key to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's confrontation with President Donald Trump.Madrid keeps declaring its independence from Washington. On five fronts at once, Spain is discovering the distance between asserting sovereignty and holding the leverage to sustain it.1. Borders and ImmigrationSpanish officials estimate some 60,000 migrants have crossed unlawfully into Ceuta in 24 hours, swimming and sailing around the border en masse. Around 25,000 have voluntarily left back into Morocco again, officials said. The Trump White House made clear in its national security strategy that it sees mass migration to Europe as a destabilizing, civilization-destroying phenomenon encouraged by leftist politicians like those governing Spain.Ceuta is its dramatic exhibit: proof, on Trump's telling, that permissive migration policies end in a loss of territorial control.White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump had long warned Europe about far-left, globalist policies, including mass migration, and that Spain should reverse course "or risk their own demise."Instead, Madrid refused Ceuta's request for a national emergency declaration, on the ground that civil-protection law does not treat migration as a national-security risk—correct as law, terrible as politics.Trump is no longer the loudest voice. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signaled readiness for "extraordinary measures," including Spain’s suspension from the Schengen Area, the zone in which EU members allow borderless movement.Spanish-administered Ceuta, which is on the African continent, is not part of the Schengen Area. The shocking footage is inducing renewed panic among European governments and their populations, already anxious about this issue. It is a gift to the nationalist right across the European continent, including in Spain, which in most cases sees itself allied politically with Trump.2. Spain as NATO's 'Wasted Cause'Spain's case about its contributions to NATO is far stronger than Trump admits. Yet Madrid is losing the argument inside the alliance.Sánchez says NATO's Defence Policy and Planning Committee found Spain met its 2026 capability targets with compliance above the European average—seventh best of 32 allies. In early June it was the third-largest contributor of personnel to NATO missions, second in naval capabilities, fourth in air, and the largest ground-force presence on the eastern flank. It has joined NATO's new Arctic mission in Finland. Of the roughly €35.5 billion it spends on defense, 44 percent goes to new equipment, against a NATO average of just over 20 percent.None of that has satisfied the White House. Trump demanded the 2 percent target be raised to shift more of Europe's security burden onto allies and push them to meet 21st-century threats. The Hague target—5 percent of GDP by 2035—is now the public scoreboard.Spain is the only ally that declined to fully commit, arguing that roughly 2.1 percent buys the capabilities NATO actually assigned it.Trump demands "5 percent"—strong, clear, easily understood—while Sánchez must explain that force planning, capability targets and spending composition mean Spain doesn’t need to meet it. Technically sophisticated, politically hopeless.Spain, alone in NATO, looks like the difficult ally weakening it just when strengthening is needed. At the summit in Ankara in early July, Trump called Spain a "wasted cause" and "a terrible partner in NATO," threatening to cut off all trade.Sánchez, at the same summit, said Spain upholds NATO’s values and is "a peaceful and pacifist country," adding that Madrid is "spending more wisely" on defense.3. Spain's Insecure Energy TransitionSpain generated 56.6 percent of its electricity from renewables in 2025 counting self-consumption, added nearly 10 gigawatts of wind and solar, and ran 75.5 percent of generation emissions-free.Sánchez says the result is power roughly 20 percent cheaper than the European average. As an electricity story it is among Europe's best, and anyone arguing Spanish renewables have failed is not reading the data. But electricity is only about a quarter of the energy a modern economy consumes. On the other three quarters—transport fuel, industrial heat, heating—Spain is among Europe's most exposed countries. It imports roughly 70 percent of its total energy against an EU average of 57 percent, and virtually all of its oil and gas—against its own national target of 50 percent by 2030.Spain has built a world-class electricity system on top of a deeply import-dependent energy system. The latter is what troubles Trump, who treats energy security as an urgent defense priority and argues that an emphasis on renewables, coupled with hostility to fossil fuels and nuclear power, leaves the West dangerously exposed.Follow the gas and Trump’s argument is clear. Spain is now one of the European Union's largest buyers of Russian liquefied natural gas.In the first half of 2026 the EU took a record 9.89 million tonnes from the Yamal plant—up 18 percent year-on-year, with Spain third behind France and Belgium.Enagás recorded Russia supplying 27.8 percent of Spanish gas imports in May, up almost 59 percent on the year. At Bilbao, one of Europe's largest import hubs, the Russian share ran at 59 percent from January to May while the American share fell to 40 percent.Energy security and climate leadership have come apart, and Spain built its strategy assuming they were the same thing. Its transition is happening but slow—and meanwhile its import dependency runs straight through hostile leverage.4. The Asymmetrical Trade WarTrump's trade threat is vivid and bilateral; Spain's answer is institutional and European. At the Ankara summit he instructed his treasury secretary, in public, to end commerce with Spain.Sánchez replied that Spain runs a goods trade deficit with the U.S.—although its services surplus leaves total bilateral trade close to balance—and that trade policy is a common European competence. Both are accurate, and both expose the problem: Spain is the named target of a bilateral confrontation while having no bilateral trade policy of its own.Ankara was the second time Trump ordered commerce with Spain halted. After the first threat, in March, trade continued normally. The Supreme Court had struck down Trump’s principal emergency-tariff mechanism the previous month—though Trump keeps finding new and inventive ways to use tariffs. That demonstrates the actual mechanism of leverage: recurring threats and uncertainty. Trump can reopen the trade issue with one sentence, indefinitely. Spain cannot close it alone.Spain is comparatively well placed for a tariff fight. Banco de España found bilateral trade worth 4.4 percent of Spanish GDP against 10.1 percent for the wider euro area.It modeled a blanket 10 percent tariff as hitting the euro area four times harder than Spain—both far below the damage to the U.S. That modeling excludes retaliation and predates the court ruling. The asymmetry is about control, not injury.Trump can single Spain out and inject uncertainty in a sentence. Spain cannot negotiate a concession or impose a counter-tariff alone: Sánchez depends on the Commission and 26 other governments, and any settlement must operate inside EU law.5. Spain’s Moral Dead-End in the Middle EastThe sharpest U.S.-Spain confrontation came over Rota and Morón, the jointly operated bases that remain under Spanish sovereignty. After Madrid refused their use for U.S. strikes on Iran it deemed unauthorized under the U.N. Charter, Trump said the U.S. could simply fly in anyway.Sánchez told the Congress of Deputies that Spain had rejected every Iran-related flight plan, refuelling aircraft included. Fifteen U.S. aircraft left Spain, with at least seven reported to have landed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. That is a real sovereignty dispute, but the larger cost lies elsewhere. In January, Spain declined to join Trump's Board of Peace, citing international law, the U.N. system and the absence of Palestinian representation. Then came July 30. The body Spain refused to join announced an agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza—the hardest unimplemented piece of the ceasefire. The deal remains alive but unresolved. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Israel are inside the mechanism. Spain is not. The institution Madrid dismissed as illegitimate is now the primary room where Gaza's future is negotiated. The loss is that Spain's moral distance became diplomatic distance. Madrid now offers little more than words. It has no seat at Trump’s tables where Middle East decisions are made.

Trump's Stark Warning: A Migrant Surge That Could Dwarf Spain New

Trump's Stark Warning: A Migrant Surge That Could Dwarf Spain

President Trump warned the storming of a small Spanish enclave by tens of thousands of migrants would look “small time” compared to what happens in the US if voters pick open-border Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.Speaking at Camp David Friday, the president called the sudden mass migration into Ceuta a “catastrophe,” and said the harrowing footage showing the lawlessness breaking out at the Moroccan border “looks like an invasion.”No sooner had the migrants breached the border than some started bathing in city fountains and using city streets as their own personal toilets. Some 60,000 Moroccan immigrants, many of them military-aged men, barged their way into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the north African coast. ZUMAPRESS.com“And that same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected, except worse. Much bigger, much easier to get into, despite the fact that we have built thousands of miles of wall, which I said we were going to do,” Trump told reporters.“We have the safest border in the world. If we’re not in office, our country will be invaded at levels that made Spain look small time.”The shocking surge followed a ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court earlier this month which said migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to reach Ceuta or Melilla, another autonomous Spanish city in northern Morocco, cannot be immediately deported.President Trump said Americans can expect even more chaos at the US borders if voters don’t choose Repubilcans in the upcoming midterm elections. AFP via Getty ImagesThe socialist Spanish government just months ago also launched a program giving legal status to some 500,000 illegal immigrants in the country.Trump blasted Spain’s government for these new policies, deriding them as “bad management” and “weak,” “very liberal” laws. Here’s the latest on the illegal immigration crisis in Ceuta, Spain: Spain claims 25,000 African migrants already sent home as authorities expel 150 people per minute Thousands of illegal African migrants overrun Spanish enclave, turn streets into open toilets and bathe in fountains: ‘An apocalypse’ At least 18 migrants dead as 49K breached border to reach Spain’s Ceuta enclave from Morocco: ‘Serious humanitarian crisis’ Thousands of migrants flood Spain from Morocco, causing ‘absolute chaos’ “They passed a couple of laws, and people read. You know, people are smart. They read from other countries, and they swam that three-mile swim, or however they got in. But nobody’s seen anything like it. That will look good compared to what’s going to happen to the United States,” he said.Hundreds of police and even an army deployment were powerless to stop the deluge of migrants, who stormed past gates and fences to get into Ceuta AFP via Getty Images“The biggest thing, the worst thing that Biden did is allowing 25 million people into our country, because many of those people are criminals, they’re murderers.”The State Department pointed to the humanitarian disaster exploding in Spain as directly to blame for its failed immigration policies.“The United States stands with the people of Spain, and all Europeans, against this egregious violation of their sovereignty and human rights,” the department wrote on its official X account Friday. “This unacceptable incident is the direct result of the Spanish Government’s deliberate efforts to enable and facilitate mass illegal migration into Europe,” they continued, pledging support for foreign allies who also want to crack down on immigration. “We are considering actions to defend Americans at home and abroad from this threat and stand ready to assist other European allies considering similar options.”
